Flashermac
The Thais would turn out in the streets to protest at the Burmese embassy a day or two. Then they'd go back to making money.
Neo
The press is trying to put a spin on the protests that this is some sort of push for freedom and democracy. However, as far as I can tell the recent protests are a reaction to the increased price of oil.
Flashermac
How much oil do the monks need?
chuckwoww
Apparently the Burmese government raised fuel prices fivefold and it's affected everything from transport to food costs. I wonder why they would do something like that.
Flashermac
Damned OPEC started prices really climbing when they decided to "sock it to the west" around 1974. Since the price of transportation went up so much, prices in Thailand began climbing. Many things nearly doubled. Second class train fare Phitsanulok-Bangkok had been about 35 baht. It promptly went to 68 baht. Your 3 baht meal went to 5 baht, then 10 baht and has kept on going. Irritatingly, folks in the west didn't much feel OPEC's action. It was the rest of the world that took the hit. Growing high yield rice crops almost stopped, since it required a petroleum based fertilzer. That meant less food to go around in places like India and Bangladesh. Stupid of the Burmese generals to cause themselves more trouble though. chuckwoww
I don't think gas prices in Burma have much to do with OPEC. They produce a certain amount themselves and they have issued exploration licences to foreign companies... http://burma.total.com/en/contexte/p_1_2.htm I don't think the generals are stupid. It's quite strange.
