Nothing much will change after the next Prez election in the USA.

The NSA is a power house with lots of $$$.

Our elected "leaders" will never offer to step down or give up their power.

I just vote with my feet, stay out of the USA as much as possible to avoid paying taxes.

They can fund their power trip on someone else's dollar!!!

Guys, I dont know about the US or Europe, but prior to 9/11 most of the Customs kiddies at Oz airports were terminally bored 'public servant' types who occasionally stumbled across a heroin shipment. I'm convinced that they now have quotas, and the kiddie porn thing must factor into that quota, particularly as the drug mules have inevitably become harder to detect (Border Security 'evidence' aside, Oz addicts continue to get their gear, and some of that has to be coming in by plane ..)

I agree that the innocent majority are punished in an effort to catch the guilty few, but I dont see it changing anytime soon. The only tip I have is that you should buy a sufficiently large statue to put yourself in the 'Something to Declare' queue and move straight toward said queue the instant you get your bags - tick 'yes' to everything legal on the immigration card, and act suitably contrite when they tell you that you need to pay duty on the ridiculous amount of duty-free grog you have in your bag :smirk:

Seriously, the 'something to declare' queue and a willingness to start emptying your bags and taking off shoes etc (yes, officer, I have been square dancing in rural areas across Asia !) has been my best bet on every trip other than Thailand (rubber gloves, anyone ?). Give it a shot.

Had a long chat with Moo Noi last night about knowing your rights. Immigration cannot simply carry out a search without providing you with a reason should you request it. It's just bullshit intimidation.

In the room he informs me that he will proceed with a full property search of everything in my possession. I calmly agree as I have nothing to hide, and there's nothing to be gained by arguing.

This is wear you say "Would you mind explaining to me why?"

If you have nothing to hide why worry, but at least you let them know that you are not willing to put up with the intimidation they run on.

I go through this shit EVERY time I re-enter the USA. I once or twice got off easier by declaring food I knew they'd take, but now that doesn't work either.

This last trip I bitched a blue streak, asked for supervisors, and was out much faster. Random search/selection my ass, every giu searched from my flight was a single white male with a lap top or camera. All they concentrate on now is my camera, memory sticks and portable hard drive. I am in the process of filing Privacy act actions and freedom of information act paper work to see what they may have on me to warrent this.

The weird thing is I've never been stopped coming from Thailand into the UK all the many times I've done it. But once a few years ago I was actually stopped leaving the UK! I was flying from London Gatwick on Emirates and had a mileage upgrade so was amongst those boarding first. Once I had shown my boarding pass I was stopped by 2 customs/immigration types. The woman asked for my passport, asked where I was going and asked if I was a frequent visitor to Thailand? Just as I said yes her eyes where popping out at all my visas and said sarcasticly "I'd say VERY frequent". She went off with my passport and then came back 10 minutes later and asked a few personal questions about me which she obviously already knew the answers too anyway? I could understand being stopped coming back into the UK, but what the fuck where they doing stopping me going out?!

Simie.

You might find buying a gun in the future to have its hazzles. Bought a beretta at the local gun store. Should have been able to walk away with it right then and there but for some shit ass reason, was put on hold. Fark, I will get the gun, but I hate the delay. Big brother really knows how to break balls.

My first trip to Australia, via Bangkok, me and my 2 mates were all pulled in and had our bags thoroughly searched and swabbed with the drug detecting wand. I told them I'm fond of a spliff but unfortunately hadn't managed to get my hands on any in LOS. They didn't find that amusing.

Nothing was found of course, but it was an inconvenience. In any case, this shit of searching hard drives and so on is probably pointless these days as, if you have something you really want to hide, you can simply store it on line before crossing the border.

Expect internet licences in a few years.
