Alonso rejoins Renault!

Fernando Alonso has unsurprisingly returned to Renault following a personally traumatic season with McLaren.

Alonso has opted to rejoin the team that made him world champion in 2005 and 2006 next season, finally ending speculation regarding his future.

The move comes in the wake of motorsport's world governing body, the FIA, deciding not to punish Renault for their role in the spy scandal, despite finding them guilty of fraudulent conduct.

Alongside Alonso for 2008 will be Nelson Piquet Jnr, who has been promoted from his role as test driver, with team principal Flavio Briatore ditching Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen.

Alonso said: "I am delighted to be returning to Renault.

"This is the team where I grew up as a driver in Formula One. Now it is time for us to begin a new chapter together.

"I am very excited about working with this great team once more, and confident that together we can move back to the front of the field.

"Renault had a difficult year in 2007, but I know that the team has real strength in depth.

"I am confident they can produce a fast and competitive car and be back at the top in 2008."

I was wondering where this thread went!

And we have a Indian team who bought the Dutch team, and Weber seems to be No 2 at Red Bull

Red Bull and Williams were the only teams in action on Monday in Jerez as this weekâ??s test session got underway. Both squads fielded their race line-ups at the Spanish circuit, but it was Red Bullâ??s David Coulthard and Mark Webber who stole the show to take first and second on the timesheets.

Coulthard was the quicker of the two Red Bull drivers, clocking a best time of 1m 20.645s. Webber, meanwhile, in the second RB4, was just over one tenth of a second adrift of his Scottish team mate. Both are expected to be in action again on Tuesday.

Williamsâ?? Kazuki Nakajima finished the day third fastest in the times, while team mate Nico Rosberg finished in fourth. Both FW30s were painted with another commemorative livery design to mark the teamâ??s three decade-long Formula One career.

â??We ran two cars on the first day of this weekâ??s Jerez test, with both the race drivers working through the test programme,â? explained technical director Sam Michael. â??After signing off the revision to the front wing mounting system, we proceeded to work on mechanical set-up and long runs for reliability. We had no major issues and both Nico and Kazuki will continue with the programme tomorrow.â?Â

With the start of the season just over a month away, pressure is mounting on the teams to ensure their new machines are on the pace in time for the season opener in Melbourne and the majority of squads are scheduled to join the test on Tuesday. Only Ferrari and Toyota, who wrapped up a second three-day session in Bahrain on Monday, are not expected to attend.

Unofficial Monday times from Jerez:

1. David Coulthard, Red Bull, 1:20.645

2. Mark Webber, Red Bull, 1:20.798

3. Kazuki Nakajima, Williams, 1:20.831

4. Nico Rosberg, Williams, 1:20.945

Force India launched their 2008 season in style on Thursday, unveiling their challenger at an official ceremony in Mumbai. The new car - a revised version of the 2007 Spyker - has been named the VJM01.

The glittering event, which took place on the Indian cityâ??s glamorous waterfront at the historic Gateway of India monument, also gave the assembled guests the first glimpse of the car's striking new gold, tungsten and white livery.

â??Today is a memorable day not only for me as the owner of Indiaâ??s first-ever Formula One team, but also for millions of Indians who can today watch India occupy a place of pride as Force India becomes the first and only Indian Formula One racing team to compete with the best in the world, at the pinnacle of motorsport,â? commented team co-owner Vijay Mallya at the launch.

â??The Force India Formula One Team is the new global face of an emerging superpower and is today increasingly viewed as a team that will change the dynamics of Formula One, bottom up and a team that dares to dream. Most importantly, the Force India Formula One Team has come to epitomize the dream of every Indian and is powered by the passion of a billion hearts!â?Â

Incumbent driver Adrian Sutil, who drove for the former Spyker team last season, was present at the launch, alongside new team mate Giancarlo Fisichella and third driver Vitantonio Liuzzi.

The VJM01 will make its track debut later this month during testing in Spain. The maiden run is expected to take place at Barcelonaâ??s Circuit de Catalunya on February 25.
