Representatives of more than 40 Pattaya entertainment establishments attended a seminar on protection against sexually transmitted diseases, held at the Public Health Center on October 26.

Mrs Na Anya Chantrakat, head of the Contagious Disease Prevention and Protection Section.

Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn formally opened the seminar, which had been organized by Mrs Wannaporn Jamjarat, director of the Pattaya Public Health and Environmental Department.

Mrs Na Anya Chantrakat, head of the Contagious Disease Prevention and Protection Section said the purpose of the seminar was to encourage the entrepreneurs to form a network to take care of their employeesâ?? health. The network would act to promote knowledge and understanding, and so change sexual behavior patterns.

AIDS is a major problem, data from this year showing that the country has more than one million HIV cases and that the number is increasing by 70 or 80 new HIV cases per day. The data reveals an increase amongst sexual workers, and the seminar emphasized the importance of the use of condoms.

Na Anya said that condoms were being distributed to entertainment outlets and that these can be collected from the Public Health Department at any time.

I wouldn't think so - at least in Pattaya.

Maybe amongst the sex workers that hang out around Sukhumwit Soi 3.

But in Pattaya you don't often see African visitors in many of the gogos and beer bars.

I would have thought that the prevalence of HIV would be a lot higher in the beer bars as the vast majority of these do not require health checks on a fortnightly or monthly basis as gogos (supposedly) do. I'm sure some gogos are strict with their health checks, and I'm sure some are not.

Then again, I'm sure if a girl waved a few baht at the local quack in a dodgy clinic where the "testing" is done, he or she would stamp the book anyway.

Who really knows in this instance?

Always better to play it safe, and cover your pecker.

My GF's older brother has been HIV+ for the last 3 years, probably acquired from a tainted blood transfusion after a motorcycle accident several years before.

Once a month, he and the six other HIV+ residents of this small (Pop.: about 200) Khon Kaen MooBan are picked-up by a Health Dept. van and transported to a regional treatment center where they get check ups and the next months supply of meds. This center sees about 150 clients a day, six days a week: that should give a pretty clear clue about just how serious the situation really is.

Most of Thailand's working girls go home at some point and many renew relationships with old boy friends and gigs, condoms frequently ignored. It's a point to remember next time anybody is tempted to bareback that cutie fresh from the village.
