The_Munchmaster
What's a grit? A grit is a salty thing, often used to prevent roads freezing in winter. Never been inclined to eat them.
rookie
What's a grit? I've only had (or found) grits served in the South (USA). Either fried into a pancake or prepared like a hot cereal. Their kinda boring,[iMHO] but better if cheese, etc. is added, but that seldom occurs in most restaurants. More info here...which you could have easily looked up http://southernfood.about.com/cs/gritsrecipes/ a/grits_recipes.htm
The_Munchmaster
....Either fried into a pancake or prepared like a hot cereal.... Why are they used in hot dishes? I mean, there's no chance of these dishes freezing.
Coss
for grits read polenta or cornmeal Cheers Coss
MooNoi
Can you put Vegemite on them? Then they could be a real breakfast!
Coss
Yes you probably could, generally it's cooked in water, cooled, to form a solid cake like thing and then fried again, so toasted and condiments on top - why not? khun_khon_neua
Grits with gravy? Never seen such a thing. Never seen them fried up into little cakes with condiments either. Where are you people from? Must be Southern Florida. :smirk: Grits get big globs of butter, sometimes ketchup. Best if mixed with really runny fried egg yolks. As anyone mentioned hash browns as a American Breakfast essential?
