Actually I get along very well in LOS, thanks, and have for years. Anybody who knows me is laughing out loud at some of the allegations against me here. And I don't think too many of the board members contributing to this topic are in any way more altrustic than I am. Arguing for your right to pollute is about as selfish as it gets. And re: forced prostitution, this of course again has nothing to do with this topic, and as many threads have previously discussed, certainly the bargirls at Nana and SC are hardly indentured. So now you're cheering for WHO?

I don't recall ever saying prostitution was healthy, just that it didn't affect me like smoke does. And I am familiar with std's. They are usually acquired by a punter choosing to go without a condom. This, imho, is also a rather selfish act, as any resulting pregnancy will be left behind when he leaves Thailand for the girl to deal with. So there's plenty of selfishness to go around. And sometimes karma is a bitch. You are familiar with condoms, right?

So now you're cheering for WHO?

What wrong with the World Health Organization? They do fine work and are well respected.

Oh, right. They said something with which you disagree and therefore are evil bastards.

Well, when you rag on me for referencing the WHO (I took "So now you're cheering for WHO? " as being sarcastic), then I must infer that you do not like them. Evil bastards is artistic license, but makes the point.

If you were not being sarcastic, then I apologize.

SD

Under the law, they no longer have that right.

Any other rights you'd like to see taken away from people?

"...brother national socialist, do you know that our Führer is against smoking and thinks that every German is responsible to the whole people for all his deeds and emissions, and does not have the right to damage his body with drugs?"

My perspective on the "freedom" aspect of smoking: In the '90s when I moved to Bkk., smoking was everywhere. I ate mostly on the street, upwind of smokers, or in my apartment. I went to restaurants occasionally, but too many meals were soured by someone else's cigarette smoke drifting into my nostrils. Whew--that always got my attention! My choice at that point was to go the the restroom and hope the cig would be finished when I returned (and that he wouldn't just light up again); endure the stench, breathe as shallowly as possible, and curse under my breath; move everything to another table; pay the check-bin and leave ASAP; ask the smoker to not smoke.

Well, I've tried all of those options over the years. None were pleasant. A few were quite unpleasant. I stopped trying the last option early on. I was never physically attacked, but there were pretty bad vibes at times. How dare I make such a request?? Can't I see that ashtrays are out and smoking is allowed?

The few bar owners/managers whom I talked with about maybe giving non-smokers a way to enjoy their meals uninterruptedly: a real non-smoking area, fans to blow smoke away, even making smokers eat outside--all basically ignored my ideas. Smoking everywhere is how it is in Thailand, suck it up or leave.

Then came the law about no smoking in aircon restaurants! Suddenly I was eating out much more than before, spending more too, for the delight of experiencing this wonderful novelty, this freedom to eat without retching.

Of course there were some problems, but finally I was able to feel that I had the law on my side, along with my old appeal to common courtesy. Grey areas existed, such as pubs, taverns, discos, pool halls, massage parlors and other aircon venues that served food, but still allowed smoking. As smokers have suggested, I learned to avoid those places, except for the pool halls that distressed me greatly, since I really like to play pool.

Then came the newest law! I had brief visions of paradise. Just sitting in a formerly smoke-filled bar like Baccara, Rawhide, Super Baby, and just breathing, was exhilarating. I could even play pool without gradually feeling too sickened to play any longer. A brave new world had opened. Bangkok was my oyster again.

Then I went to Nana Plaza and Patpong. Ooopps, reality check time... OK, smokers need venues too.

As this law sorts itself out, smokers need not panic that they will be subjected to the reverse of what non-smokers had to deal with. I'm optimistic that reasonable compromise will happen, with real choices of good venues for all of us. From my perspective this will be a huge improvement on how it used to be.
