As has been discussed before, drinking alcohol has no effect on others in the same airspace. Smoking does. Why is this simple reality so difficult for so many here to understand?

As thailien8 has said, when smoking was banned he went out more and spent more. This has also been the experience of restaurant and pub owners in other countries that have smoking bans. Baccara, Super Babies, and Super Girls who ban smoking are just as full as Rainbow 1,2,and 4, which pay the police and allow it. It will take some time to sort out, and when it has I expect there will still be places to smoke in Thailand.

A Canadian friend of mine told me yesterday that Europe is 20 years behind America and Canada on no-smoking legislation as well as percentages of people who smoke. He and his wife had a hard time finding non-smoking restaurants there last year.

So here's my smoking education for today, in case some of you are still in denial: Smoking causes cancer, lung and otherwise, and takes at least 10 years off your life. It is a leading cause of high blood pressure and heart problems. It also closes up your arteries, especially the small ones in your brain and your dick, causing premature memory loss and erectile disfunction. In women, it is a cause of underweight babies. It is a highly addictive, cancer causing, expensive habit that is also highly irritating to the non-smokers in the area, whether they tell you or not. Kissing a smoker is truly like licking an ashtray. If you smoke, there are many ways to quit. One that has worked for several of my friends is hypnotherapy. There is also the patch, which is available in Thailand. Do yourself and your family and friends a favor and quit. And if you've tried before, try again. Smoking is a long-term death sentence, and stopping anytime gives great benefits. Note: None of this applies to occasional smoking of cigars. They just smell bad.

Try telling the friends and families who have lost loved ones due to an incident involving a drunk driver that alcohol has no effect on others, try telling the battered and abused wifes of alcoholics that alcohol has no effect on others, pretty weak argument you have.

And why is Europe behind America and Canada? Why the hell should Europe follow the muppets in North America where life is governed by laws and liberties are being eroded on a weekly basis all in the name of fighting terror. You are from a country where you have the right to carry arms and monthly I read about multiple shootings in the USA, if you want to campaign to save lifes why not xampaign about fire arms rather than a LEGAL substance?

As I stated earlier the Non-Smoking Law is not a law as such in Thai Statute since it was implemented by a military regime and not a democratically (sic) elected goverment and as such is worthless and everytime you refer to this non-existant law just demonstrates your ignorance of the legal system.

You state that smoking causes cancer, so does Many Other Things Should we ban sunbathing since it could give you a melanoma?

You are paraphrasing misleading statistcs to back up your argument, tell me what percentage of smokers develop lung cancer? Go and find the facts and continue this debate.

I am all for Non-Smoking eatablishments, when I go to such a place I respect the rule imposed but conversely I ask non-smokers to respect my right to socialise in an establishment where smoking is allowed and not try to impose your opinions carte blance across the board.

Check out World Clock and you will see that STD/HIV/AIDS deaths are over 2 times less than Cancer deaths, unfortunately the figures for cancer does not discriminate between snokers and non-smokers but if you were to do a little bit of research for yourself you will find that more people die of STD's than from smoking.

If you wish to continue this crusade come back with some solid facts, or better still just stick to the establishments where smoking is not allowed and relax.

I'm very sure I covered the problems alcohol causes elsewhere in this discussion. Again, I drew a contrast between the direct affect of smoke on anyone in the same airspace versus the potential for alcohol when used to excess-the example I used is alcohol impaired driving. Of course, again, as you are grasping for straws, this is WAY off the subject.

Out of curiousity, I clicked on the World Clock. Rather than the statistics you quoted, I read the following: Cancer-1,417,065 deaths, STD/HIV/Aids-604,638, or less than half. Also, remember that almost all of those are in Africa, not meaning to be racist, but these people-particularly the women- don't have the information or education to avoid it. the World Clock also has statistics for Cardiovascular disease-3,265,744 and Respiratory diseases-721,933, both of which are also caused/enhanced by cigarette smoking. So look at that website again please.

Now, I also checked on the number of smokers who end up with lung cancer. I didn't spend a lot of time on this, but Net Wellness says smokers are 15 times more likely to get lung cancer as non-smokers, while Health A to Z says 90% of lung cancer occurs in people who smoke. On this subject you can find numbers that are all over the map, anywhere from 1% to 90%. Still, it would seem to follow that if you can prevent lung cancer in yourself by stopping a bad habit, you would do so.

Finally, a word on America, specifically on Prez. Bush. Didn't vote for him, don't like him, can't wait until he's gone. If he had his way, there would be smoking encouraged everywhere. Definitely a moron. Feel free to pile on. And I don't own a gun. But why should the Europeans follow the US on non-smoking laws? Well, the health of their people for one. More importantly, most European countries have government paid health care, so a huge monetary saving is to be had when smoking slows. As I understand it, the UK and France have now limited smoking, maybe others as well. And now Thailand.

Funny how so many on this board used to moan and groan against Thaksin/Purachai for early closing, etc. Now they are the duly elected democratic government and all laws put in place by the previous one should be null and void. Interesting legal opinion from a bunch of non-lawyers. I'm betting it won't be changed.

Some more interesting facts from prisonplanet.com:

- The Nazis banned tobacco advertising and financed huge public relations campaigns to propagandize people into giving up smoking.

- The Nazis banned smoking in government offices, civic transport, university campuses, rest homes, post offices, many restaurants and bars, hospital grounds and workplaces, and Hitler gave awards to associates who quit the habit.

- A ban on smoking in private vehicles was called for.

- The Nazi Reich Health Office warned that smoking caused impotence and produced posters depicting smoking as a dirty habit of Jews, Gypsies, blacks, intellectuals and Indians.

- Nazi lobbyists lectured terrified children in schools on the horrors of racial impurity as a result of smoking.

- The term "passive smoking" (Passivrauchen) was coined by the Nazi Anti-Tobacco League. Its author, Fritz Lickint, offered no supporting evidence to claim that smokers poisoned everyone around them, while also stating that drinking coffee caused cancer.

What conclusions can we draw from these parallels? Either the Nazis were benign really cared about everyone's health or they used the specter of anti-smoking to exert massive control over people's lives and scale back basic freedoms, getting a foot in the door for the political dictatorship that was to follow.

It's funny, I remember when the ban came in, in Ireland.

The pub across the street from my home converted a courtyard into a smoking area, it was semi-roofed but extremely well ventilated. The guy put in those gas heaters and some picnic tables on a wooden deck.

What happened.....?

If you want to go for a smoke, you can hardly move for all the farkin non-smokers out there..

I've been tempted to say to the bastages, "Hey, you! Yeah you! What the fark are you doing out here.... YOU'RE NOT SMOKING! Back inside with you!".
