Torneyboy
QF 12 AN Australia-bound Qantas jet carrying hundreds of passengers has blown four tyres while trying to take off and has been stranded on the runway at Los Angeles. No-one was hurt. Lucky no one was hurt ..
Bangkoktraveler
Fast acting on the pilot's part. [color:red]"Miller said the pilot aborted takeoff after a warning light came on as he took the Boeing 747-400 down the runway at 11:05 p.m. The tires blew when the pilot jammed on the brakes, she said, and the plane came to rest on an adjacent runway."[/color]
Hugh_Hoy
The problem is obvious. The plane was outfitted with "tyres". Runways in the U.S. are designed to be used with "tires". HH

shygye
The pilots practice rejected takeoffs every few months on the simulator. Nothing to see here. Keep on moving.

Old Hippie
Not a big deal, might take an hour or so to replace 4tires, depending on tire supply and man power.
Bangkoktraveler
Why does it take so much time? They are only tires aren't they?
bust
Don't they need to get it to China to carry out repairs...
Old Hippie
Why does it take so much time? They are only tires aren't they? Basically, you jack it up, remove the dust cap, safety lock bolts and safety wire, break the torque, remove the nut, remove the tire, then roll on a new one, torque the nut to seating torque, then back it off, re torque it, install the nut, the locks, re-safety it, and put the dust cap on, and clamp it, safety the clamp, and down jack...the tires are extremely heavy, and a tire jack is needed, as is a tire dolly, as blown tires don't roll. Check the pressure, and release for flight. Takes 1-2 guys maybe 30 minutes to do 1 tire, once they have all the stuff set up. Assuming they had enough crews and equipment, they could knock it out fast...if Quantas is run like most airlines, they don't have enough equipment or parts on hand...
