Tiger Moth
I once had a link to a web page that showed a bunch of common phrases in Thai language and the equivalent in Issan language. But, somehow I can't locate it. Anyone have a link to a web site like this? If so, please post it. Thanks very much!
Flashermac
Maybe this one? Not the greatest, but an all right introduction. http://wikitravel.org/en/Lao_phrasebook Another one. The history is screwed up (Isaan was NOT part of Laos until 1907), but it's a nice enough beginner's look at the language. http://www.geocities.com/siamsmile365/isaan/isaan.htm
Flashermac
And also, a really bare bones intro: Kham Muang

The map from www.savannanet.com/lao-isan.jpg , a Lao website, says that "France gave away Laos territory (Isan) to Siam in 1907" which seems to agree with the Geocities page. Also, a girl from Buriram told me about a third linguistic group in the Buriram/Surin area called "Suay" or somthing close to that. I had never heard of them before; my GF claims they speak "Same Khamen". Any knowledge of this group?
Pom Michael
My little understanding is that the "khamen" spoken in Buriram is not the same as the Srisaket version. Where is Preako when needed?
Flashermac
It's a dialect, just as there are different versions of Issan Lao (or German and English, for that matter). A taxi driver from Surin told me he could understand Cambodians, but he had trouble speaking to them.
