A real Thai find in Vegas ... no kidding!

I was in Vegas over the weekend and stumbled upon a real gem of a Thai restaurant. It is easily the best Thai food I have ever had in the US.

It is called Lotus of Siam . It's located in a crappy strip mall on Sahara east of LV Blvd. It is a small place, decor is only so-so, but the food is very good, and, for Vegas these days, quite reasonable. And the place is packed to the rafters.

If you find yourself in Vegas, and you don't mind getting away from the Casino scene for a meal, you should check this place out.

I think I mentioned that one to ya. The owner is a cool guy, and really knows his wines; not to mention that the food is top grade.

My local friends (two couples) and Mrs Tiger (back in the day when we were happy) and I spent a wonderful evening there when he opened circa 2001. He was just happy to have someone who knew about LoS, could speak Thai, and was interested in his wine/food pairings. I think he splashed three nice bottles on us, in addition to the three we ordered. And he joined us for dessert paired with a brilliant 1997(?) Chateau Doisy Vedrines Sauternes! That was on the house too   .

I make it a point to stop in whenever I'm in Vegas. And I tell everyone I know about the place.

Highly recommended. Not real expensive, either.

Cheers,

SD

PS -- if you are craving street vendor type som tam, hit the "Lao Market" located in a very dodgy 'hood: Las Vegas Blvd just north of US95 (actually, just north of Bonanza). Left side in a strip mall, next to the plasma donor centre (I *told* you it was dodgy). In the back, they have a couple of old ladies who make som tam to order -- as good as any I have eaten in LoS!

Quite possible you told me, but I suspect that brain cell died a slow and tragic death.

We actually could not get into the overpriced pseudo-celebrity-chef joint we were looking for, and found Lotus of Siam on the internet. They were sold out too, but I begged the owner (told him I LOVED Thai food, but could not find any good stuff in the US) and I got a table. Sadly, no free sauterne. Price was very good ... about $30 per head, compared to $100 per head at China Grill the night before.

I figured you had scoped the place out long ago. Just thought I'd share with the unwashed masses.

BTW, that somtam joint sounds really nasty. Gotta love North Vegas!

Ms Thai and I ate there last week on the way back from Yellowstone. Great lunch buffet! Less than ten bucks per for what the she says is the best Thai food she's had in her four years in the US. Get there early, opens at 11:30, so you can avoid the lines. It does beat the hell out of the $35 buffet at the Wynn.
