What I actually referred to was the long term barfining of a bargirl and granting her temporary girl friend status. This can be quite satisfactory as long as the punter doesn't lose sight of the fact that she is a paid companion despite any declarations of true love she may be offering. Sure, hiring the services of LT "escort" can just be a matter of convenience as well. But that doesn't imply that any delusional or self-destructive behavior is taking place. As you have said, that is when problems begin. Besides, there's plenty of good company to be had in LOS.
