Russia sends forces into Georgian rebel conflict

You are confusing the Black Sea with the Baltic. 90% of people in South Ossetia voted for independence. I'm sure the Russians want Georgia weakened. They obviously don't want another NATO/US base right on their doorstep. They also don't want too much Caspian oil and gas leaking out that way.

Ukraine? I dunno. Yushchenko was pretty much installed by Western forces. Tymashenko seems more pro-Russian. My impression is that Ukrainians are fairly divided when it comes to Russia. There were major protest when NATO tried to get a toe hold in the Crimea. Kiev and Moscow have ethnic ties that go back a long way.

"So why are the now independent nations formerly incluled in the USSR so worried?"

Some are, some aren't. I'm not sure how worried they are. The Polish government wants NATO protection which is why they allowed the US missile base in. I don't think all Poles are happy about becoming a target.

Just like old times?

"US intelligence fears the Kremlin will supply the sophisticated S-300 system to Tehran if Washington pushes through Nato membership for its pro-Western neighbours Georgia and Ukraine.

The proposed deal is causing huge alarm in the US and Israel as the S-300 can track 100 targets at once and fire on planes up to 75 miles away.

That would make it a "game-changer", greatly improving Iranian defences against any air strike on its nuclear sites, according to Pentagon adviser Dan Goure. "This is a system that scares every Western air force," he said."

and the view from Israel...

"But this is not that same old Cold War. This is not about two ideologies fighting over space, but four superpowers - the United States, Europe, China and Russia - that are busy evaluating their economic forecasts for the coming decade and neutralizing mutual threats."
