The International Icehockey Federation is celebrating 100 Years! :):applause::beer:

I. VICTORIA CUP (Switzerland)

It had been 49 years since the Rangersâ?? last visit to Switzerland, and hockey fans in Berne have been waiting forever for any NHL team to visit the city. Well, the Blueshirts came, they saw, and the conquered.

Over 16,000 people witnessed the Original Six team beat SC Bern 8-1.

The fans are really loud and what sets them apart is that they just keep going regardless of the score," said Brandon Dubinsky, who scored two goals tonight.

"The great thing was that they cheered for both teams, and that gave us a little boost," he added. :smirk:

1. VICTORIA CUP

New York Rangers - Metallurg Magnitogorsk

Having already routed Europe, Ural-based Metallurg Magnitogorsk is eager to test their skills against North American competition. The inaugural Victoria Cup provides just that platform.

When the Russian giant beat Sparta Prague (5-2) last year, they not just captured the European Champions Cup but also captured a ticket for a showdown against the New York Rangers on Wednesday in Berne. The game will mark the first time a Russian team meets one from the NHL in 17 years.

Ovation Sports is pleased to advise that the Victoria Cup three-game event will be broadcast live throughout Europe and North America. The Swiss public broadcaster SRG serves as the official host broadcaster for this 18-camera HD production. The inaugural event, an IIHF-NHL-Ovation joint-venture, will be beamed to fans throughout Europe and North America by Victoria Cup TV rights holders.

At 19:30 CET, fans worldwide can watch a historic rivalry re-ignite as the New York Rangers take on the European club champions, Russiaâ??s Metallurg Magnitogorsk. The Victoria Cup marks the first time the NHL has played a Russian club in seventeen years.

New York Rangers - Metallurg Magnitogorsk 4:3

(0:2,1:1,3:0)

And there we had it. The first Victoria Cup, where the best European team took on the NHL in a country thatâ??s famous for its neutrality. And the New York Rangers wrote its name to the hockey history, with its 4-3 win over Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

The arena was red, white, and blue, but not the kind that coach Tom Renney might have anticipated as hundreds of Metallurg fans had travelled to Switzerland to witness the historic game. Their team, dressed in white tonight, started the game focused and with a lot of energy.
