I grew up in So Cal, and everybody knew that Rock Hudson was gay (Richard Chamberlain and Raymond Burr too). Never heard any talk about Gomer until years later. As to his supposedly being gay, I know a gal who dated him when they both worked in Birmingham, Alabama. She says she never thought he was gay. But like you said, the ginger kid had more then one friend, but I never saw him in real life with more then one friend, but thay was only my observation.
