Red shirts stockpiling eggs to throw at PM

Red-shirt leader Somyos Prueksakasemsuk on Wednesday said protesters have prepared to throw eggs at Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva this evening.

Red shirts will resort to egg-pelting as a gesture of defiance for Abhisit's leadership although they plan a peaceful rally, Somyos said.

Abhisit is scheduled to make a speech at a hotel in the Ratchaprasong area.

would be too harsh - yet.

A worldwide sporting activity sadly overlooked in Athens is long-distance egg throwing. Every four years, world athletics and swimming records are broken, but the egg-throwing record has survived for more than a quarter-century. We'd like to see this bizarre sport included in future Olympic Games.

The world record was established on November 12, 1978, in Jewett, Texas, when Johnie Dell Foley threw a fresh cackleberry the almost incredible distance of 323ft 2in (98.51m) to his cousin, Keith Thomas, who caught it flawlessly. Many of the other catchers no doubt finished with egg on their faces.

Stimulus plan under fire

Top economists have given the thumbs down to the government's 115-billion-baht supplementary spending budget, saying it is designed to woo votes rather than prop up the sagging economy.

of 18 projects to be implemented in mid-March, a scheme to grant a one-off 2,000-baht allowance to eight million employees under the Social Security Fund and 1.4 million civil servants making less than 15,000 baht per month came under the most fire yesterday.

Former finance minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula said the 2,000-baht grant scheme had caught him off guard.

"I cannot imagine how the government came up with such a plan. I do not want to say that I cannot believe this is from an Oxford or Cambridge graduate," he said :grinyes: of some cabinet members with backgrounds at prestigious British universities, including Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

"I am baffled. The 18 billion [earmarked for this scheme] will just disappear. It will not stimulate the economy because it is a one-time payment," he said.

"I think paying people 2,000 baht per head is to lure votes," he said. :smirk:

House meeting almost collapsed twice

AM House Speaker Chai Chidchob had to call a House of Representatives meeting twice on Monday morning after the number of coalition members of parliament was inadequate to proceed with the first meeting.

Out of approximately 600 members, only 200 registered to attend the first House meeting, which started at 9.30am. As a result, the meeting was adjourned.

Mr Chai called another meeting at 9.50am and about 320 attended, allowing the session to continue.

The House Speaker said if the lack of quorum happens three times, the government can dissolve the parliament and hold a general election. However, he urged the government to prevent this problem from reoccurring and called on the opposition not to request for a quorum count frequently.

The session will discuss agreements to be signed during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit, scheduled to be held in Hua Hin from February 27 to March 1 as well as the mid-year government supplementary budget.
