Flashermac
The Post reports Government House is surrounded by the Red Shirts. Maybe it's their turn to occupy it?
drogon
Although the reds promised not to invade government house..... As the army got some riot control training this is maybe time to apply their training to a live situation?
Flashermac
My father was in the Illinois National Guard as a teenager just before WWII. He was in an infantry regiment. He told me the mayor of Chicago kept a sealed order signed by the governor authorizing him to call up the NGs on a moments notice because of the race riots that paralyzed the city just after WWI. Anyway, he said their riot control training was quite sensible. Their rifle magazines were empty, but their bayonets were fixed. Nobody gets bayoneted unless they charge the troops or refuse to get out of the way. No problems such as the idiot NGs at Kent State, who apparently opened fire on demonstrators just for the hell of it. Horsed cavalry and mounted police are also effective n crowd control. A horse carries a lot of weight and pushes people back quite effectively. (Dad said he wished he'd joined a mounted unit, just so he could have been one of the last horse soldiers. In WWII, he was artillery.)
drogon
Riot control drills lasted only a few hours for my unit (weathermen are usually not expected to participate to airport security drills but officers and most NCO are). All in all, quite efficient and non lethal...having experimented as a target the water pump trucks -> this is a very efficient mean to disperse crowds. CTO
That's because they know no matter how much training you give a weatherman, they still can't control the weather let alone predict it
Flashermac
In the USAF it used to be a dead end job. A friend told me he made captain long before anyone else. But then he was stuck. Captain was a high as the position was authorised. You be lucky if you managed to retire as a major. Nice cushy job though. I know the Army tried to eliminate dead end jobs. Don't now about the Air Farce.
Mentors
UDD to blockade Foreign Ministry The red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters will enclose the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at around 2pm Wednesday to pressure Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya to resign. At the anti-government protest in front of Government House, one of the UDD leaders Jakrapob Penkair claimed that if the coup was not staged on September 2006, the current prime minister of Thailand would be Thaksin Shinawatra and the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva would not have the opportunity to host the 14th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit. Mr Jakrapob also branded the government as a thief because it let a terrorist, who laid siege to airports and Government House last year, join the cabinet. Another UDD leader Nattawut Saikua said his group will continue to protest peacefully. He said the premier does not have to fear that eggs will be thrown at him because the price of an egg is now two baht and it would not be worthwhile. Mr Nattawut also asked Mr Abhisit to eat rotten canned fish and low-quality milk distributed to students. The government was previously accused of giving cans of rotten fish as relief supplies and distributing low-quality milk to schools. He said fugitive former prime minister Thaksin did not order the UDD to prolong the protest and he will not make a phone-in during the demonstration. It is up to the government to follow the UDD's demands, if it does not want the protest to prolong, he added. The group's demands include dismissing Mr Kasit, prosecuting PAD leaders for occupying Government House and Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports, amending the 2007 Constitution, and dissolving the lower House http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/136883/udd-to-blockade-foreign-ministry
