Tones. You can show them with the letter as above, or a marker above the word. Only useful if Romanizing a Thai word as the tone is "built-into" the Thai spelling

Mid tone (à¹?สียà¸?สามัà¸Â) = mai (no additional marker) -- มัย or à¹?มลà¹?*

High tone (สียรี) = mái -- มัย

Low tone (à¹?สียà¸?à¹?อà¸Â) = mài -- à¹?หมà¹?

Rising tone (à¹?สียà¸?à¸?ัà¸?วา) = mÄ?i -- à¹?มà¹?

Falling tone (สีย) = mâi -- หม

Cheers,

SD

* - that's the Thai spelling of the English word mile (yes, even without the final L sound since Thai's don't really "do" hard stops on words); AFAIK, all foreign words spelled in Thai are mid-tone.

I had to have my say

ี อส bee aeht loanword, English [Thai transcription of the foreign loanword, "bs," "b.s."] bullshit or ูลิ buun chit [Thai transcription of the foreign loanword, "bullshit"]

My bad, ม is falling too. Not sure what I was thinking there. :doah:

Should be หม. So ignore the above, it's:

Rising tone (à¹?สียà¸?à¸?ัà¸?วา) = mÄ?i -- à¹?หม

Thanks Flash.

Cheers,

As far as I understand it after doing a bit of reading , strawberry is used as avoidance slang used to mask the insult and is less direct than TORLAE à¸?อà¹Âหล (bullshit!). Strawberry สà¸?รอà¹?à¸?อรรีà¹? is used because it contains the first syllable of à¸?อà¹Âหล, or at least it does when the consonant cluster is simplified to สà¸?อà¹?à¸?อรรีà¹?, as often happens in colloquial Thai. :D
