I am in the same uncomfortable position re: the coup and Thaksin, so I lean more toward it was a necessary thing, so then it must be OK (vs the opposite leaning for Iraq).

 

Something along those lines, yes. The necessity to displace Thaksin is evidenced by his far reaching erosion of what there is of Thai democratic institutions; I saw a good summary about it today in my infrequent Starbuck's reading of the Bangkok Post.

 

I am fairly optimistic about Iraq, which only makes my opposition to the invasion even more contradictory. But I stick to it. No responsible leader would, like Bush did, drag his country into, as you say, an unnecessary war with potentially catastrophic consequences for the invaded country. Out of sheer luck and and maybe the professional competence of General Petraeus it might well end well, though. And the country is getting better post-Saddam and that's my contradiction.
