What would you do? Heh.

Here is a silver lining - by posting your message, you may have prevented some other guy from getting duped with the same ploy. I think the internet has not only contributed to popularizing Bangkok's nighttime venues, but also reduced the learning curve for those who frequent them.

This is one reason why users should, in general, post the name of the bar where the girl works. I would also lean towards naming the girl as well, but I understand that most people on this board don't feel the same (especially the moderators), so we must respect that.

In general it would be fair to contact the managers and/or owners to let them address the situation before the bar gets a bad review, but that is not always feasible.

In this case, I understand if the bar is not named because gummi knows the owners and probably doesn't want to give them a bad rep. Also, gummi probably wants to be able to show his face back there.

Hi,

"I would also lean towards naming the girl as well, but I understand that most people on this board don't feel the same (especially the moderators), so we must respect that."

The problem with allowing this is that it is very easy for someone to post something bad about a girl for vindictive reasons.

How are we to know the girl really cheated the guy, or just turned him down before any barfine was paid and the guy is just spouting lies to give her a bad rep?

Sanuk!

You won't know, but then, IMHO, it should not really your responsibility to know. If its not true, the bar owner can respond or other members can respond. In other, the issue should be decided through an exchange of views. That is the best and fairest way to decide matters. Allow a free market of ideas, and let individual members come to their own opinions.

I was talking to a lawyer friend from the U.S., and he said that in the U.S. and most other jurisdictions now, it is only when moderators start to police boards that they have liability. If its is an open forum they have no liability, but once they they start to monitor and censor, they take on the legal obligation to do so fairly. This is becoming the international standard. His advice: never take on the responsibility because if you censor or modify just one post, you assume legal responsibility for all posts. I have heard this before in connection with AOL, and it makes sense.

Just a thought.

Gadfly,

You might be right. But is there not also a rule that everybody accused is allowed to have a defender?

I do not believe that the boardmembers or the barowners are willing or in every case well enough informed to take this part (the barowners maybe not even have time for something like that).

Cheers

Sounds like a good rule for a court, but this is not a court, and we are not judges. Information is dispensed here; not justice.

There is tremendous value in learning good and bad news about bars. If a barowner is ripping off customers or a bar girls is pulling the stunts Gummigut describes, I would like to know about it, and I would like to know who is pulling the stunts. Each of us can and should make our own judgements about what is and is not true.

I had something similar happen to me a few years ago at Soi Cowboy when I barfined my first dancer based on her gorgeous body . At the ST hotel things did not go well and I left there feeling very down and depressed . It was my last night in Bkk and I didn't want it to end this way so I walked on over to Thermae whereupon I found two of my favorite girls and cried on their lovely shoulders . Well they decided the only thing to do was escort me back to my place and spend the night teaching me what a delicious thing a Thai sandwhich can be ( with NO CHARGE ! ) . Well the next morning I headed for the airport with the biggest smile imaginable ! The moral of the story being that there's always something good just around the corner waiting to happen !

My thinking was along the same lines as Gadfly's.

There is always the chance that some individual is pissed off at a girl and is trying to ruin her reputation. That will be a very rare occurence. But it's also possible that there was a misunderstanding and we got only one side of the story. This actually happens a lot.

But as Gadfly points out we are not judging the girl and potentially giving her career a death sentence. We don't have that kind of power. Publicizing her offenses will hopefully hurt her pocketbook a little bit, but more importantly it might help board members avoid a bad apple. One bad report is not going to sink a girl, obviously if a member is going out of his way to repeatedly criticize a girl, then he should be reprimanded.

It may be that Bkk is too big and there are too many bargirls (all with the same name) for most people to keep track. This system does work to some degree in the U.S., in the context of strip clubs where there is a much smaller pool of girls and it is easier to do some research and keep track of which girls are rip-offs.

There may be political, legal, or personal reasons why the moderators would choose to not allow girls to be named. But I think practically (and statistically) it would be a good thing.

Isn't it just an ethical standing. After all, what is your name? In my opinion it's not fair to name individuals on a board like this.

Prostituition is a shady business. And it's certainly not like buying a gadget in a store.

Be careful and on your guard at all times. That will save you from a lot more trouble than allowing naming on an anonymous board, which -- by the way -- is only read by a fraction of the visitors of Thailand.

Only my opinion.
