Tyfon
Just to be clear, I have the British affliction that the term student (at least for those in my age-group) refers to university-age students. The use of the term 'student' in the UK for what I have always known as (and once was) a school pupil is relatively recent . Thai school (<18) uniforms are quite prim and proper, the university versions seem to suffer from a serious shrinkage problem. I agree, you don't need to see much Japanese porn before you draw some seriously worrying conclusions about their society.
HeartThais
They really don't understand Asian culture that places a greater value on older men. When I was 34 I dated a 22 year old Chinese girl and age was never an issue. Speaking in pure generalities, Asians might be more *flexible* on age but don't confuse that with placing more value on older guys. Asians tend to have a pretty strong idea of life progress and age. If you are a guy in your 30s and you don't own some significant assets like a house, you are pretty low on the totem pole, for example.
whitelotuslane
Only small changes are required to save Asian girls from being sold into a life of slavery, she says. The Body Shop has already joined the Child Wise campaign by selling a hand cream that directs profits to Cambodian outreach programs. That's just weird. Lubricating cream against child abuse?! Now that you mention it, I remember hearing the term pupils in the States when I was a wee lad back 50+ years ago. Then it seemed to give way to using students for anyone of any age. An early example of feel good PC? Thai students' uniforms vary somewhat from university to university. Chulalongkorn has long been strict in that the gals' skirts cannot be more than about 2cm above the knee. The University of the Chamber of Commerce (private) is notorious for the shortest skirts. When I first came to Thailand as a PC university volunteer in the early 1970s, the students with the shortest skirts were from Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Sigh ... for the good old days, when I was young enough to go out with them (... which has became a no-no nowadays).
kamui
The article is the typical nonsense. It's no surprise that the article doesn't give any numbers. These numbers would show that Western pedophiles (which should be put to jail as long as possible) are only a fraction of the sex slave trade in SE-Asia. Nicolas D. Kristof, the moral conscience of the N.Y. Times, made a similar, unreflected comment on prostitution in Cambo: Link And he had to clarify it in his NYT blog soon after: Most of customers in places like Cambodia are locals, not Westerners. That’s entirely true, and I didn’t mean to imply the opposite. Western men are only a tiny fraction of the customer base, although non-Asian foreigners are a problem. Overseas Chinese from Singapore, Taiwan and elsewhere often end up as buyers of virgins, for example.Link
cardinalblue
The main problem with this article, it doesn't know if it wants to discuss child predators, human trafficking or adults looking to get laid.. It is all over the place, lacks focus and direction and poorly wriiten to boot... CB
devils reject
"They really don't understand Asian culture that places a greater value on older men. When I was 34 I dated a 22 year old Chinese girl and age was never an issue. It was never even mentioned by her or her Asian friends. There's no way an Australian girl would date someone that age.....unless he was rich/famous of course and then it's o.k!!! Kristy Hinze anyone?" A couple of examples to illustrate that the last bit of your post isn't always the case. I do however agree that Asians are a lot more tolerant with relations or marriages where there is a large age difference. When I was 31 I met my now ex wife, Aussie and 21 years of age. Whilst the age difference was never an issue for us it did however take a big effort to persuade her parents that I wasn't some pervert trying to take advantage of their daughter who'd barely left her teens behind. Luckily we got there in the end. A guy I worked with a few years ago was in his mid 40's and turned out to have a girlfriend that was about 20 years his junior. As soon as that become common knowledge in the workplace the guy was branded a pedo by some of the idiots working there. The fact that they loved each other and had a kid together became a moot point. Compare these two examples to my partner's brother's situation (Thai). He's nearing 50 and has a mid 20's girlfriend and they have a 6 month old daughter. No one's ever blinked an eyelid about that one.
