The guy is decent but alittle bit wild, I fear he's gonna get himself into some Thai bar girl trouble. This article suggested that there were lots of sex-pervert sting operations in BKK...what are the chances that a guy would get duped by an underaged girl, THEN, busted by international law enforcement. The kind of sting operations you're reading about would be targeting pedophiles who go well out of their way to find what they're looking for, and it's not 17 year olds they're after. The places a foreigner could find himself in Bangkok on a first visit would be pretty safe from this kind of thing. They don't have 8 year olds working in the bars. And I think you can be pretty sure no go-go bar or foreigner oriented place is going to be taking part in a sting operation, laying traps for would-be pedophiles. A pedo would have no interesting in hunting in bars or any of the typical foreigner venues-- what they want isn't there. I think the only way your uncle might be at serious risk is if he IS a pedophile and heads to places where kids can be found -- and for that I guess he'd need to be connected with some inside info or other people who are into that kind of thing (which he would probably have researched before leaving). But if that was the case, it's not your uncle you should be worrying about. If the question is can some typical normal healthy guy get caught up in a pedophile sting by accident when he wasn't seeking that out, the answer is almost certainly not. The closest would be a 16-year old working in a bar in Pattaya, but she may as well have had flashing lights above her head : very clear that she was underage. Also know a katoey who claims she started working Nana carpark at 16 - thats one hell of a transition from school to that life. Not an isolated incident, this happened many times in the past. And I know a guy who said that he went with an under-age girl, but "...it was ok because her mother said so." Its best to level with your uncle and let him know that there will be some risks and temptations in this country that may seem safe; but he should be under no illusion that he should feel free to do anything here that he could not do (with respect to children) in his own country.
