Reds to petition European Union

10:32am

The United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) will today petition the European Union at its Bangkok office over the use of force to deal with the red-shirt protesters at the National Memorial yesterday, UDD co-leader Weng Tochirakarn said at the Ratchaprasong rally stage.

“We will go to the EU office in Bangkok to submit our letter explaining the real situation relating to the violent clashes between troops and the red-shirts on Wednesday,†Mr Weng said on Wednesday morning.

The UDD will also call on the international community to send observers to observe the political situation in Thailand, he said.

Yesterday afternoon’s clashes left one soldier dead and 2 others injured. A total of 17 red shirts were injured; three of them were in critical condition.

Next step is to ask the Pope to send in the Vatican Guards to protect them.

PAD gathers at Roi Et army base

1:56pm

At least 100 members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) from Roi Et, Maha Sarakham and Kalasin late this morning rallied in front of the 6th Infantry Regiment headquarters in Roi Et province, demanding the government and the armed forces crackdown on red-shirt protesters.

They handed over a letter to the base commander, Maj Gen Chavalit Chunprasarn, via his representative Maj Santipong Chingduang, calling for the suppression of the terrorist groups in Bangkok.

Before submitting the letter, a representative of the yellow-shirts, Nitisak Phothiladao, read out a statement saying it was clear that the anti-government protests by the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) were not peaceful, were a violation of the law and had severely damaged the country.

The statement said the red-shirts had planned to change the country from being a democracy under the monarchy to a republic. They had used war weapons to attack state offices, to kill soldiers, innocent people and those who have a different political ideology.

The statement asked the government and the armed forces to:

1) Immediately declare martial law in all necessary areas

2) Suppress the red-shirt protesters who violated the law

3) Send troops to destroy places, equipment and groups of people who were a threat to national security, and

The government also must introduce major reform in the country and suppress all terrorist groups before dissolving the House of Representatives and organising a general election.

The yellow-shirts sang the national song and then dispersed.

In Khon Kaen, the yellow-shirts staged similar rallies in front of Sripatcharin and Sihadechochai military camps, while those in Nakhon Ratchasima rallied in front of the Army Region 2 head quarters.

In the North, PAD mobilized its members to rally at Kawila military camp in Chiang Mai, Surasak Montri military camp in Lampang, the 4th Infantry Regiment base in Tak, Meng Rai military base in Chiang Rai, and Somdej Phra Naresuan Maharaj military camp in Pitsanulok.

In the East, anti-reds rallies were also held at Surasinghanath military camp in Rayong, in front of Sriracha district office and at Nong Takian public park in Sattaheep district of Chonburi, and a marine special force headquarters in Trad.

Pro-government demonstrations were organised in the western provinces of Kanchanaburi and Nakhon Pathom.

In the Central region, the yellow-shirts rallied against the UDD in front of Adisorn military camp in Saraburi and a military base in Petchburi.

In the South, the anti-reds and anti-house dissolution protest took place at Sena Narong military camp in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district, the city hall in Pattani, Navy Force Region 3 headquarters in Phuket, Phraya Samantarathburintr military camp in Satun, Aphai Borirak military camp in Pattalung and Vibhavadi-Rangsit military camp in Surat Thani.
