Excellent article from the Nation

It does not happen often but today's editorial article summarizes the situation well and asks the right question. Why do western government and media still don't get it who is really behind the red shirt protest?

Definitely worth reading, especially for those are not that familiar with Thai politics.

Yes, those same guys/gals.

The rules have not changed (so much) since the 1970's - and the ones that call Thailand home (like myself) - understand and try to play within the rules.

Long ago I learned the "Golden Rule" - if your a foreign man and marry a Thai lady - then take her to your home country and support her/your family. Your not really welcome/wanted to stay in Thailand (unless your retired and have money coming in to support).

It may not be codified in law - but that is the attitude of the country - any one have any other opinions on this?

The rest follows this Golden Rule - your welcome to come and spend your money - but not welcome to come and stay. It takes work to stay living in Thailand - and that is exactly what the people in power want!

In my personal opinion, that is a pretty poor article.

It fails to adequately address the size and chaotic nature of the protests and simply leaves it at the point that foreign media 'thinks' its chaos. Now, the reasons for this (the chaos) may be distorted in foreign media, but there is chaos and lawlessness so write about it! Secondly, it doesn't address the lack of action by military and police. Its basically a failed state unless somebody starts doing their 'duty'. The nation needs to address this instead of saying protests are but symptoms of emerging markets. Finally this BS about a foreign community is just poor rethorics and we all know the lay of the land in that regard.

Not a very balanced article. Could have just used two words greed and power and made the same point like most articles written about the crisis. I also fail to see how appropriate the use of the word "democracy" is in this. Maybe "tyranny of the minority" would be better suited.

As for the foreign media maybe they are just tired of the "same dog different dick" of thai politics.

We really dont give the Thais credit for being able to move beyond a centuries old feudal system, do we ? That isnt a criticism, purely an observation - really happy to hear otherwise.

(look at the countries around them, the blood that has been spilt in the last 50 years and you have to wonder if they must have something right ...)

" It is imperative that the international community gains a thorough understanding of the situation. Both the media and all governmental organisations have to do their job more effectively "

The international community's interest in Thai affairs is about as large as that of Khun Somchai's in other country's affairs . Except water temperature in Phuket and cheap tickets . Few people want a thorough understanding of whatever happens in Thailand as long as the hotels and the beach are safe .

A fine way to do a job more effectively would be the government to clean the roads from the current pest and not let any authority evaporate . A government without exclusive authority to use power is worth nothing , it is Afghanistan or Somalia .
