and this emerald buddha plot is just the latest indication that the govt is getting increasingly desperate to find a pretext for a crackdown. an even more transparent lie than the previous toppling-the-monarchy one.

the quicker abhisit and his team of incompetent clowns leaves the better for the country.

What are you on about mate (or what are you *on* perhaps!)? Looking for a pretext for a crackdown!? C'mon, there's been justification for a violent and assertive crackdown for over a month now, piled up every day. Indeed, for with every day that passes in BKK, the red shirt gives the government another valid reason to strike at them. It's just that they don't.

Wat Phra Kaew 'was targeted'

The Department of Special Investigation is claiming that a rocket-propelled grenade attack last month near the Defence Ministry actually targeted the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Speaking on behalf of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES), Department of Special Investigation chief Tharit Pengdit said on state television last night that a suspect confessed that his actual target on March 20 was not the ministry at all but rather the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Kaew.

Mr Tharit said authorities have already arrested former police officer Pol L/C Bandhit Sitthitum, 43, and Supanas Huivej, 43, in connection with the attack. Three others have been summoned for interrogation, including Pol Lt Col Supachai Puikaewkam.

According to Mr Tharit, Pol L/C Bandhit is apparently friends with Pol Lt Col Supachai, whose wife Jureeporn Sintuprai is a red shirt supporter who lives in Pattaya.

He said Pol L/C Bandhit confessed that he drove Ms Jureeporn to join the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship rally at Phan Fa Bridge.

Pol Lt Col Supachai allegedly told them that they needed to attack an important public place to create chaos.

Mr Tharit said that Pol Lt Col Supachai prepared the RPG launcher for Pol L/C Bandhit and gave him 500,000 baht in cash to attack the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. ‘‘Luckily, the grenade hit electrical power lines and came down near the Defence Ministry,’’ he said.

Mr Tharit, who heads the DSI-led special case committee investigating cases related to the political turmoil and so-called ‘‘terrorism’’, called a meeting yesterday with investigators from 30 police stations in Bangkok. He briefed them on cases related to unlawful gatherings and acts of terrorism.

Meanwhile, an autopsy panel disclosed that the soldier killed in the clash between security forces and the red shirts on Wednesday near the National Memorial in the Don Muang area was shot by a high velocity bullet.

Col Saksan Chaitaveep, a physician at Phra Mongkutklao Hospital, said during a press conference that Private Narongrit Sara was killed by a bullet from a high velocity rifle that pierced his metal helmet.

Question for you firearms experts: what exactly is a high-velocity bullet? I assume no handguns would qualify but when does a rifle become high velocity? Is an M-16 high velocity? Are they mostly referring to sniper rifles which would imply that it was special forces or an outside party?

Thanks. Just wondering of there was a minimum, such as 3000 fps.

(I used to load my own ammo years ago and sometimes would load pretty hot rounds to see it I could improve the trajectory. By your definition they all would have been considered high-velocity, even the light loads.)
