Sansern: 500 terrorists infiltrating reds

9:33pm (last night)

There are about 500 "terrorists" blending with red-shirts in Bangkok, Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, spokesman of the Resolution for the Emergency Situation, said on national television on Friday night.

Col Sansern said troops have the right to protect themselves.

He said that soldiers have been using their M16 assault rifles as the last resort when people open fire on them, but they would aim their shots at lower parts of the body in an effort to avoid killing the protesters.

Prime Minister's Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey, meanwhile, warned of more clashes in the next few days as security forces step up security measures around the protest site.

The measures were aimed at reducing he number of protesters entering the area, he said.

Soldiers block upcountry reds

12:00am

Soldiers and police have prevented red shirt supporters from the North and the Northeast from joining the rally in Bangkok, officials say.

Second Army Chief Lt Gen Weewalit Chornsamrit yesterday said the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) ordered security forces to carry out the operation under powers granted by the emergency decree.

The decree was yesterday extended to cover an additional 15 provinces bringing the total to 17. They include red shirt strongholds in the Northeast such as Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Si Sa Ket.

The decree allows authorities to prevent red shirt supporters from travelling to Bangkok.

The CRES said it was emasculating the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship by preventing more protesters from joining the rally at Ratchaprasong intersection.

Lt Gen Weewalit confirmed that he would not let red shirt protesters from the Northeast leave for Bangkok. His subordinates have been ordered to strictly enforce security measures, but demonstrators could rally in their provinces as long as they did not break the law.

Local protests were under control, he said.

Chiang Mai Governor Amornpan Nimanant said he has set up an ad hoc centre in order to deal with the emergency situation.

As the centre's chief, Mr Amornpan warned local people not to join red shirt protests in Bangkok.

Chiang Mai is one of the red shirts' biggest bases.

Police and soldiers have formed joint checkpoints on the Asian Highway in Ayutthaya province's Bang Pahan district to block demonstrators from the North from reaching Bangkok. Officers at the checkpoint searched pickup trucks and vans, recording their licence-plate numbers and the names of drivers.

Ayutthaya Governor Witthaya Phewphong warned local people not to leave the province, which is covered by the emergency decree, for Bangkok for their own safety.

He said security authorities were guarding important places including power plants, oil depots and commercial banks in Ayutthaya.

In Ubon Ratchathani, a pillion passenger on a motorbike fired a machinegun* at a Bangkok Bank branch on Promarat Road in Tambon Nai Muang at 9.20am yesterday.

The banks' exterior was damaged in the attack, which took place while about 10 police officers were guarding the branch. Police said they found nine bullet casings

The bank opened for service after repairing the damage.

In another development, about 300 red shirt protesters in Ubon Ratchathani yesterday blocked the Seri Prachathipatai Bridge which crosses the Moon River.

Ubon Ratchathani Governor Chuan Sirinantporn convinced the protesters to reopen the bridge at about 1pm.
