Jumps in to add his two cents worth... (plus rant)

From reading through this thread, my first assumption is that it is aimed more for the visitor to Thailand than it is for the residents. I also read into that an expectation that English is going to be the language that will be used, not Thai. This is also probably quite true for many of the residents who are not wholly comfortable using Thai.

This is probably why the term 'top 4 international hospitals' has been coined.

I've not been to any of these, but was less than impressed with medication that my wife got from BNH. I thought the place a little overpriced.

Had an experience or two with Bangkok Hospital, came away with a bad taste in my mouth. Now that they've spent quite a bit on upgrading and a new Heart center they also have become more 'legal' aware. By this I mean they will make you sign a piece of paper that waives responsibility should you not take their recommended treatment.

Example 1. I went to see them for a stomachache. Was given an intravenous antibiotic(?!)($$$) and recommended that I go for a barium enema ($$$!!!!). I refused and was asked to sign this piece of paper absolving them of any responsibility.

Went to my regular hospital where I have a record for almost twenty years. Doctor there used a stethescope, recommended some pills and rice gruel for the next couple of days, and it cleared up.

Example 2. Went to see them for eye drops as I was developing a small stye (I have BUPA medical insurance). I saw a doctor, an eye specialist, they wanted to scrape the stuff off my eyeball and give some antibiotic which I of course refused. Insisted on only the eyedrops. Out comes a piece of paper, please sign.

A lot of middle Eastern customers these days, the Amari (just in front of the hospital entrance) is almost complete.

I won't take my business there any more, not when they want to use procedures that I feel are not required, and using experimental medicines on something as simple as a stomach ache.

Ok. Rant over.

Outside of the main drag, I've had good service and reasonable cost at the Mayo Hospital out near Kasetsart university. Staff do speak English, and they get specialists in from the respected government hospitals when needed. Both my children were born there.

Paolo (in the same area)is a bit on the expensive side.

Wipawadee Hospital (also around Kasetsart)gave out too much medicine for my liking.

Central General (out near Sapan Mai) is okay but maybe a little too far outside of town.

Most of these hospitals also have healthcheck packages.
