Thai Catholic School Teacher Caught Caning Students

Video footage exposing a Thai teacher caning students at a Catholic boarding school in Nakhon Ratchasima has appeared on Thai television recently. The teacher, not certified by the Teacher’s Council of Thailand, has subsequently been suspended by the school.

Nakhon Ratchasima, the 31st of August 2010: The controversial footage was aired on Thai television Monday, showing art teacher, Somchai Limthanmaporn caning several students at the St. Mary’s School in Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima. Over 40 students have since come forward complaining of Mr. Limthanmaporn’s use of corporal punishment, forcing the school to suspend him from duty.

A school administrator, Nongkran Prathumtri, stated that the school could not condone Mr. Limthanmaporn’s actions and has subsequently released him from employment with the facility. No professional sanctions have been taken against Mr. Limthanmaporn, who is not an accredited teacher with the Teacher’s Council of Thailand. Parents of the children involved have however filed complaints with police over the beatings.

The teachers beat the crap out of us when I was a kid. There was usually a wooden paddle hanging from the wall just to remind us what could happen. Somehow we managed to grow up anyway. I survived wall-to-wall "counseling" in Army basic combat training too. Ever get smacked around because a drill sergeant just felt like it? Ah, the good old days. :p

I've seen many a teacher cane primary school students on the hand in Thailand. Supposedly, it's not allowed - but in fact it is. I've seen an entire rowdy class told to line up to get whacked several times. It's called situational reinforcement. Works too.

p.s. If this teacher wasn't certified, why was he teaching? Maybe he came cheap?

Foreign teachers have to have a Thai teaching licence, which they got from the MoE by showing the required credentials (no Khao Sarn Road crap accepted). I'm not sure if anything is required of Thai teachers these days. Once upon a time Thais studied at teachers colleges to become qualified, by the teachers colleges have been turned into "rachapat universities" - a mistake in my opinion.

Catholic School my kids go to wanted to cane kids, I spoke quietly to teacher, no problems, no caning.

That said, as a kid I'd MUCH rather get canned (I was canned every Wednesday for a year aged 9 if I got below 75% on the wednesday spelling bee) than humiliated.

Pain I forget, words do hurt more oddly.

Still both very wrong and not what teaching is about.

They used no corporal punishment at the Catholic schools I went to. A nun might give you a rap on the knuckles with a ruler for misbehaving in class, but nothing formal.

It was only at a public junior high school (grades 6-9) I went to that did it. You were called to the vice-principal's office and he'd have you drop trou and use a paddle tennis paddle on you. Can't remember how they dealt with the girls.

My peers still talk about what a prick that VP was. I only got the paddle once, for skateboarding, and the cunt also confiscated my board. I got it back a few weeks later, after my friends saw his son riding it in their neighborhood. A bit unethical, methinks, confiscating shit and bringing it home to your family. :onfire:
