Chances of Red Shirts F*%&*#! Up Tourist High Season

Was just talking to my buddy who's accompanying me to LOS this December and January.

He asked me a question I couldn't answer:

"What chance the Red Shirts regathering and paralysing BKK over the Xmas /New Year peak high season period?"

I saw in the BKK Post on the weekend that some Red Shirts protested in Rachaprasong on the weekend - 6 months anniversary after the ending of their last occupation.

I was there in May and it wasn't a very nice time to visit Bangkok. Just wondering if they might decide to "strike while the iron's hot" and do something during the peak tourist time that could really damage the country's image again such as occupying the city or seizing the airport or something. :dunno:

Anyway... didn't K. Abhisit say there were going to be elections in November? What happened to them?

It's all very well keeping my eye on the Thai media as I do online, but nothing like local knowledge.

Any info from old hands on the ground there appreicated!!

Thanks in advance, guys.

Without getting into an argument of Red v Yellow one needs to put these demonstrations into perspective.

They do not paralise the whole city just small enclaves of the metropalise and as such should have little if any impact on the tourist element.

You will be fine!

The yellow shirts are about to rally right now at the Parliament building to oppose the proposed constitutional ammendments. They expect about 10,000 to show up, but say they will not stay overnight. They'll sleep elsewhere and come back in the morning - planned protest for 3 days.

As Mekong says the protests did not shut things down. Dave32 and I wandered through Patpong at the height of the red protests - day after the red shirt thugs had invaded the hospital and threatened to rape the nurse. The bars were open and BGs were trying to get us to go in. We just had a late lunch and left. Maybe we should have seen what was happening inside. We might have been raped. :hmmm:

Yes the old "They Did It First" argument.

The UDD already rejected the offer of elections by year end by the current PM.

Stop confusing the issue with the facts! :cussing:

The reds were offered everything they wanted in May including an early election, but the plan didn't assure Takky would come back in triumph. Thus Takky rejected it. (Shows who was pulling the strings.) The resulting violence rests in 90% Takky's lap.

^Actually they were offered everything they wanted by the 4th or 5th day of the protest. That was when Jatuporn got the famous text message on national TV just as Veera was about to accept the offer. Jutaporn got up and walked out, leaving Veera with no choice but to follow.

That was the beginning of the end for Veera. He is now vilified by the UDD as being a traitor for trying to end the protest by agreeing to an election by the end of the year.
