<< Well, early Saturday morning , August 11, we learned that Congressman Paul Ryan, Republican from Wisconsin, is to be Mitt Romney's pick for the next Vice President of The United States.

What are we to think of this selection? He's not a graduate of Columbia University. He's not a graduate of Harvard. He wasn't selected as the President of the Harvard Law Review. He didn't get a special free quota scholarship ride to any prestigious university and, instead, had to work his way through Miami University of Ohio. For Pete's sake, the man drove the Oscar Mayer Wiener Truck one summer and waited tables another!

One morning when Paul Ryan was sixteen years, old he went in to wake his father up and found him dead of a heart attack. He didn't write two books about that experience. Instead, he assumed the role of adult at an early age, never having the luxury to pursue youthful drug use and the art of socialist revolution.

Instead, Paul Ryan and his mother took his grandmother, suffering from Alzheimers, into the household and served as the primary care provider for his grandma. His grandma wasn't the Vice President of the Bank of Hawaii so she could offer nothing in return, except the element of "need".

Once Paul Ryan got his BA in Economics from Miami University of Ohio, he was hired as a staff economist in Wisconsin Senator Kastin's office. The job must have not paid well because young Ryan moonlighted as a waiter and fitness trainer. No one offered him a "token honor" position at the University of Chicago and a $200,000 dollar a year salary.

When a still young Paul Ryan returned to Wisconsin to run for Congress, he didn't demonize his opponent and dig up dirt to shovel against him. He waited until the standing Congressman vacated the office before seeking the office. In Janesville, Wisconsin they don't have a big political machine to promote you, to criminalize your opponent; instead Paul Ryan had to go door to door and sit at kitchen tables and listen to his future constituents.

After getting elected to Congress. Paul Ryan didn't triumphantly march into Washington, buy himself a Georgetown townhouse and proceed over to K Street to rub elbows with lobbyists. He bunked in his Congressional office and used the house gym for showers and a fresh change of clothes.

Paul Ryan then married and took his bride back to Janesville. He lives on the same street he lived on as a kid and shares the neighborhood with eight other members of the Ryan clan. He hunts with the local Janesville hunt club and attends PTA meetings and other civic functions.

For those who can't make those public functions, Paul Ryan bought an old bread truck, converted it into a "mobile constituent office" and drives around to meet with those who need his help and attention.

No, I don't know if we can vote for a guy like this. He doesn't have a regal pedigree - he's Irish for God's sake! No one awarded him a Nobel Peace Prize two months after getting elected. No one threw flowers or got "chills down their leg" as a he took his seat in Congress.

What is most despicable about Paul Ryan is that he has had the nerve to write the House Budget for three years in a row. He's is brazen and heartless in advocating in that budget for a $5 trillion dollar reduction in federal spending over the next ten years! The House passed his budget three years in a row, and three years in a row the Democratically controlled Senate has let it die in the upper house, without ever proposing a budget of their own. What is wrong with this guy? If Congress were to cut $5 trillion dollars from the budget where would the President get the money to give $500 million dollars to a bankrupt Solyndra? Or $200 million dollars for bankrupt Energy 1? Or $11 billion dollars to illegal aliens filing INIT, non-resident tax returns to claim $11 billion big ones in child tax credits, even for their children living in Mexico?

I don't know. Paul Ryan seems heartless to me. He keeps wanting to cut government waste, he keeps wanting to put a halt to those big GSA conventions in Vegas and, worse, he keeps trying to make people look at that $16.7 trillion dollar deficit! The guy's no fun at all!

Who wants a numbers cruncher? Who wants someone spoiling the party by showing folks the bill? Nothing will spoil a party quicker than sending the host the bill before the party's over.

Party Hearty folks! At least until November. >>

First, I would say that Obama is a great story. He certainly was not priveleged and he was obviously so smart he was head of Harvard Law review.

Plenty of people get in prestigious schools anyway they can. I am not sure that I see anything wrong in that. As long as they are not lying. A businessman is deemed smart if he takes advantage of any loophole, etc. to expand his business. Tons of American businesses, greatly admired businesses take full advantage of coporate welfare. A student who takes advantage of any program or loophole in order to get legally get into a prestigious school is acting in the same way. Harvard wants a representative student body and will give preference to a white male from South Dakota who excelled and got straight As and great LSAT scores at S. Dakota State University because not too many students come from that type of area and school.

As for Ryan, like Cain he has a great personal story. Its what America is about, its a great advertisement about the possibilities in this great nation. However a great story doesn't make a great politician. Ideas, ideology and integrity as well as a few other attributes make a great politician. Cain is a great story but shouldn't be anywhere hear the Oval office. Ryan has views that are simply too steeped in religious zealotry as well as far right thinking with no room for compromise that I would even feel uneasy if he was Presidet of the PTA in his Jamestown much less President of America.

Interesting how the right tries everything to paint Obama's story as negative. If you turn the above quote around it means that while Obama worked extremely hard as a black kid without a father and having to live in different countries with a single mother, he got scholarships for his work, went to one of the best university of the world without rich parents who paid for the preparation and access, took over a prestigious position because he seemed to have out-shined others, Ryan seemed to have been a mediocre student who neither was able to enter a leading university nor was he deemed worthy of a scholarship. Therefore he had to flip burgers.

So when will Obie show us his grades to prove how great a student he was? You'd think he'd want to flaunt them, if they were so fantastic. What is he hiding? :hmmm:

As to scholarships, I remember my father ranting about discrimination. His income was just a little too much for me to qualify, I was told as much. But there were Black-only scholarships, Hispanic-only scholarships, Asian-only, women-only etc with no income stipulation. White-only scholarships would have been racist.

We had a numbers cruncher as mayor of Kansas City, Mark Funkhouser. Before being Mayor, he was auditor for the city for 16 years and very much like and respected. He didn't try to make coalitions with other city council members and was often on the minority side of council voting. He did not try to develop any rapport with business people or political organizations. He did hire his wife as a consultant and the city had to settle a law suit brought by her assistant, who was black and claimed that the Mayor's wife had used belittling black phrases in describing her assistant. The council ordered the Mayor to fire his wife and he sued the council (and eventually won, although she did "retire"). A recall petition was started and was finally quashed by Funkhouser because he kept questioning each person that signed the petition and demanding proof that they were a citizen. In his re-election bid in the primary, he came in third, the first time that had happened since the corrupt days of boss Pendergast. But I'm sure that Ryan's political career won't be anything like that.

It seems that Ryan's speech was mostly based on lies and falsehoods. As I understand it is the fist time in US history that a candidate (not some Super PAC or minor surrogate) was spreading so obvious lies during his most important speech.

Pre Civil Rights college admissions was pervasive and systemic almost exclusively for protestant white males. Harvard for example even had a Jewish quoata. Unsaid and not unwritten but it was generally accepted that they would only enroll so many Jews. Italians, Catholics, etc. were limited in numbers. The Jesuit universities were set up partly because of these limitations. Black and Hispanic presense were very very rare. Harvard set up their Radcliffe colleges to keep women out. They were known as the Harvard and Radcliffe colleges for decades.

Post civil rights, the laws changed but the hiring committees were still made up of the same folks with the same mindset. They did as little as they can and it took a further couple of decades (and lawsuits) for even some state universities to change.

Black schools such as Morehouse, Spelman and Howard were largely created by rich whites with the purpose to keep blacks away from traditional schools and state universities.

One has to look at WHY these gender, ethnic and racial scholorships came into existence in the first place. It was because of the systemic limits of these groups.

In terms of preparation, the High Schools of minorities in those days were far below others in quality, books, etc. class sizes were bigger, in Jim Crow south public minority High Schools had to use the discarded books that were no longer used by other schools.

In hindsight there were obvious better ways but at the time, the new laws did not change the mindset of the same people who were in charge se well as the minset of white parents before the laws. What to do?

You can make a law saying to treat people equally but its a big country. Courts couldn't always enforce law nor is it their duty. The powers that be simply didn't follow the new laws. The same folks who enforced the biased system were the same ones who were supposed to enforce the new ones.

If you were a smart white guy with great grades you got into anywhere you wanted. It was the borderline admission student who had to worry about a minority candidate. That's where the competition started. Bakke in that famious case wasn't a top student, he was a borderline admission candiate who lost out to a minority candidate with lower grades.

Ask yourself "What kind of person believes the

'facts' without checking them out?"

..... and that is where our political 'cesspool' comes from.

Do we have leaders or do we have 'shit slingers'?

"•GM plant — Ryan: blamed Obama for the closing of GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wis.

Truth: One of the biggest whoppers of the night; the plant closed before Obama was even sworn into office. His position also contradicts the Republicans’ position of opposing President Obama’s auto rescue.

•Stimulus — Ryan: “The stimulus was a case of political patronage, corporate welfare, and cronyism at their worst. You, the working men and women of this country, were cut out of the deal.â€

Truth: The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said the stimulus created 3.3 million jobs. Four out of five economists agree. Ryan himself wrote letters requesting stimulus money, then lied about it.

•Medicare — Ryan: “Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama.â€

Truth: As we’ve pointed out many times, Obamacare doesn’t raid Medicare and Ryan’s plan would do a lot more to ruin Medicare. One of the biggest lies of the campaign.

•Obamacare — Ryan: “You see, even with all the hidden taxes to pay for the health care takeover…â€

Truth: Politifact called the “government takeover†of healthcare meme their “lie of the year†in 2010."

Since he is joined at the hip with Eric Cantor, whom I despise for his "my way or nothing" approach to running the House (which includes shutting down government if he doesn't get his way), I wouldn't trust anything Ryan says without checking it out.
