Coss
In an earlier post I was anticipating, whether or not Manafort would be allowed to wear a suit, rather than his prison togs, they let him wear a suit, but it looks like more serious penalties for him are in the offing.... A federal judge on Friday ordered lawyers for Special Counsel Robert Mueller and President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort to appear Feb. 4 for a closed hearing on whether Manafort breached his plea deal by lying to investigators. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-manafort/judge-to-hold-sealed-hearing-on-whether-manafort-breached-plea-deal-idUSKCN1PJ13C
Coss
American Government looks like it is gonna re-open, Trump, Nancy and Chuck have made announcements to that effect. Basically Trump has caved and agreed to the Dems 'until February' proposal. So, cupla weeks, then. Trumps said that despite everyone backing his position and "everyone knows that I have a very powerful alternative, but I didn't want to use it at this time..." he's playing it as a win for him.... of course and 18 minutes of word salad to tell the public. But Trump has yet to actually sign it, or tweet some more witch hunt nonsense... oh, and no wall....
Flashermac
If you can be arrested for lying in Congress, the whole lot of them will be locked up.
Steve
Trump's shutdown is a result of reacting without thinking things through. Sometimes his instincts work and sometimes he doesn't pull it off and this is one of them. No one would support a 'National Emergency' action for it. Everything any President does is a precedent for some future precedent and cooler heads know once you let him do that, a left wing Demagogue can do the same one day. He painted himself into a corner this time. Lesson learned, move on. At the end of the day, there is a country to be governed. Meanwhile, some early 2020 candidates have come onto the scene. Kamala Harris is interesting but frankly, I don't see anyone who can beat Trump right now. Or even make it close.
Coss
I think it's more of a question of if he can avoid jail, rather than be beaten in a contest.

Coss
Steve, for whatever reason that video wont play for me. ------------ 17 hours ago, Flashermac said: If you can be arrested for lying in Congress, the whole lot of them will be locked up. for those that are interested: Everyone who's been charged in investigations related to the 2016 election and how they're connected to Trump. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/08/21/us/mueller-trump-charges.html
Coss
And here's some history from left - Manafort, Stone, Black. Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (often simply Black, Manafort) was a lobbying firm based in Washington, D.C. Formed in 1980, it merged with Martin B. Gold's Gold & Liebengood to form BKSH & Associates in 1996. As Black, Manafort & Stone, the firm was one of the first political consulting groups to work for Ronald Reagan's presidential candidacy in 1980, and would later also have extensive connections to the presidential administrations of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. In 1984 it was renamed to Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (BMSK) & associates, after Peter G. Kelly was recruited. The firm has represented, and lobbied the US Congress on behalf of, numerous foreign governments and heads of state from both representative democracies and unelected dictatorships including Mohamed Siad Barre of Somalia, dictator Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, dictator Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, and Jonas Savimbi of Angola. According to The Torturer's Lobby, a report published by The Center for Public Integrity, the firm received $3.3 million in the early 1990's for their work with dictators. During the 1988 presidential campaign in the United States, it was disclosed that Black, Manafort retained the island nation of the Bahamas as a client at a time its leadership was being attacked for alleged ties to drug traffickers. BMSK officials insisted that they intended only to help the Bahamas obtain more United States aid for efforts to curb drug smugglers. Domestically the firm represented Bethlehem Steel and Tobacco Institute, helped elect Senators Phil Gramm, Jesse Helms, Charles McCurdy Mathias Jr., Arlen Specter, Paula Hawkins and David F. Durenberger—and worked on legislation that benefited the firm's clients. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black,_Manafort,_Stone_and_Kelly
Flashermac
In other words, they're in it only for the money. They'll help anybody who pays them. If Manafort starts talking, quite a few politicians might start worrying.
