I personally think we should amend the Constitution and make the lifetime appointments on the Federal benches and Supreme courts 25 year appointments and after they are up for re appoinments that could go for life up to 90 years old. 25 years is more than enough to see their record.

FDR was hated by some and he was called King FDR by many Republicans. The Republicans have no one to blame for the environment that led to the Dems sweeping the elections. The Republicans ran the country from 1918 to 1932, In that time, many of the reforms under fellow Republican Teddy Roosevelt in checking monopolies, etc in business went by the wayside and the masses were poor. The stock market was completely manipulated and the government did nothing about it. The country put in a draconian immigration law in '24 that effectively cut off European (and all) immigration because of bigotry. Immgration from Europe shifted to Russians, Slavs, Jews and Italians after the 1900s the country was very, very xenophobic. The KKK had its biggest rise in the 20s, some 3 million members. It was common to be part of it outside the deep south and midwest for the first time (Trump's grandfather one of them).

The environment for FDR and a far left agenda seems eerily similar to the situation happening around us now. I warned a few times in previous posts that excusing Trump will eventually bring in someone to the left like that. Such as excusing the completely  lassaiz faire Coolidge, Harding and Hoover administrations putting in rubber stamp head of agencies. It's called the Roaring 20s but only for the rich to get richer. There was a lot of abject poverty still throughout both America urban centers as well as the deep south and midwest areas.

You need a balance. FDR did act tyrannical at times. Some people will argue that he needed to. The Republicans at the time fought him in every way. They had enjoyed 14 straight years of rule. The Crash and Depression was close to causing a social revolution. The communist party was big at that time in some circles. People forget that. Socialism was very big, especially in the unions. Had the poor masses coalesced, it could have changed America in massive ways. FDR did change America. Social Security, etc, was a change in America mindset. America changed consciously in large part from you are responsible only for yourself, to we are all in this together. Social Security was a socialistic program pure and simple and went counter to everything America was consciously at the time. For example, natural disasters that affected an area was the sole responsibility of the area to fix. That changed to the state sending aid.

The supreme court at the time of FDR had a lot of Republican appointees, surprisingly one of the justices that was in office throughout the 20s was former President Taft who loved the law more than being president.

Basically, there would be no FDR without 14 years of prior rule by administrations that let the powers that be run unchecked. And allowed a lot of xenophobic and bigoted politicians in the government that resulted in the golden era for KKK membership, brazen lynching of Blacks as well as wholescale slaughter (Tulsa massacre, Rosewood massacre), as well as even lynching of Sicilians and a Jew (in Atlanta), open bigotry of eastern and southern Europeans that resulted in a draconian anti immigration law in 1924 that essentially shut off immigration and big business ("the business of America is business"-- President Coolidge (R) who was President for most of the 20s and not Hoover who got the blame for the crash it was actually Coolidge)

Again, if you like or support Trump, and the planets align again, you will get a far left wing Trump and would have nothing to say about it if you are honest.

If a crash happens on the scale financiers, hedge funds and independent economists say before the election, it will Sanders or Warren will win easily as well as Dem senatorial candidates and you will see an agenda with legislation that will look many European countries but with no money to pay for it. The rich, both individually and corporate America will be taxed for it and the military will be severely cut and China will see that as an opportunity to replace American hegemony overseas.

My guess is this will all result in an increase of the right wing shootings we see now and a crack down via Homeland Security and the FBI of right wing groups. Talk of an actual revolution, etc.

What most people, including Americans forget is that the original 13 states were separate colonies. Completely independent. The British for example had Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and a few other Caribbean colonies and they all operated independent of each other. Same with their African colonies. Ghana, Nigeria, etc. they all operated independent of each other. So did the American colonies. They were all founded by various people for completely different reasons. Mostly religious in the north and business reasons in the south around farming and slavery at its core. The Quakers of Pennsylvania were completely different than the Puritans of Massachusetts.

The fact they all got together in the first place with completely divergent cultural and religious views is somewhat of a miracle. The constitution as written was really a great compromise of peoples who were extremely different and even had complete distaste for one another's society (such as the anti slavery Quakers of Penna. vs the pro slavery South Carolina).

My guess from reading about that time, was they were hoping as time goes by the country would become more cohesive culturally and through amendments "create a more perfect" union.

There was once a time, when the Senate was the congenial half of the Congress. It's smaller (100 vs over 400 in the House), the members stay longer, they had their own Senate chambers where men (almost exclusively men) of completely different ideological beliefs were very close personal friends. You can't get much different than Ted Kennedy and Utah's Hatch but they were very close friends.

Biden comes from that era. He and Graham are/were friends behind the scenes. But Graham has shown he is a pure political animal. There was always a line with the Senate. That has been gone for some time now. It started in the '90s and the comradery has pretty much been gone. I don't want to keep picking on the Republicans but its fair to put the blame on them.

So what do you think of FDR, who actually tried to pass legislation allowing him to appoint up to six more justices on the Supreme Court to  ensure he could do whatever he wanted?

Coss: Don't care, FDR's not fucking up my world and the world of the people I care about.

"During Roosevelt's first term the Supreme Court struck down several New Deal measures as being unconstitutional. Roosevelt sought to reverse this by changing the makeup of the court through the appointment of new additional justices he hoped would rule his legislative initiatives did not exceed the constitutional authority of the government. Since the U.S. Constitution does not define the size of the Supreme Court, Roosevelt argued that it was within the power of the Congress to change it.

Coss: Isn't FDR dead? Flash, roll forward a few decades/centuries,
