California has the 5th highest GDP in the world, just ahead of Great Britain, but it also has the highest poverty rate and 1 out of every 4 homeless people in the United States lives in California. How is that humanly possible? High taxes is one reason and outrageous rents are certainly another. The regulations in California greatly increase the cost of everything including gas and electricity. There are an estimated 2.4 million illegals living in California, which depresses wages especially among the poor and middle class...

Something coming?

Harley-Davidson’s first production electric motorcycle will debut in 2019

Harley-Davidson has been toying around with the idea of an electric motorcycle for about four years now, but yesterday the company committed to putting one into production. There are no specs just yet, but Harley executives say to expect it to hit the market “within 18 months.â€

The new bike will presumably build on the somewhat meager performance specs of LiveWire, the prototype electric motorcycle Harley-Davidson rolled out back in 2014. That bike was able to go from 0-60 mph in under four seconds, which was impressive, but it was limited to just 55 miles of range in “economy†mode. Electric motorcycles have come a long way in the few years since then, so it’s likely that Harley-Davidson’s first production bike will be far more capable...

Gentlemen,

I do remember that Madame Hillary has been accused of corruption and similar wrongdoings here on this very forum. I think it was Mr. Cavanami. During my merciless continuation of finding out the truth in politics I yesterday came across a report which said that President Trump of the United States received about 30.000.000 USD from the NRA to support his campaign. I am only a naive European Liberal with even the occasional left-wing sympathy but do you think it would be in order to speculate that these 30.000.000 do somewhat influence President Trump´s love for the NRA?

Cav - there are large tent towns in Hawaii, full of homeless people. Where are they from> Hawaii?

Nope

When people become homeless they often move to somewhere that is a bit less harsh when sleeping in a park/tent

In Australia we have many who cam from the Southern colder states to Queensland

And of course, we have many from New Zealand who came to Bondi, a lovely beach area.

Also California I take from other posts here, is a bit of a gateway for poor MExicans,

I don't have the knowledge to discuss the other points you make in this post,

but the one about homeless I believe firmly is not accurate.

As a person who has lived in California, its bad governance going back to then governor Reagan in the late 60s. The governors with the help of the legislature has gutted California economically. The reputation of the state is that its a huge, socialist state but its not so. San Francisco and LA have that rep and have earned it to a large extent but this is also the state gave the US, 2 very right wing presidents in Reagan and Nixon. This totally contradicts the "liberal" California that the right talks about.

From 1967 until 1999 the state was run by Republican governors with the exception of 4 years. It was in that time California went through its decline. The state had an enviable statewide higher education university system. Its a fact that Republican governors, fitting with GOP policy nationally of being anti teacher and education, gutted Education from kindergarten to university by cutting money. The state lottery that was supposed to go to education has been robbed for example.

The state has built 23 prisons since 1965. There is a lot of government waste on BOTH sides. I'm not letting the Democrats off either. They have overspent on the local level. And in the state legislature. Both parties have over spent and not shown fiscal prudence, but the state was run by Republicans during the decline. That's a fact.

The fact is the 'illegal immigration' crisis is a false talking point. More Mexicans are leaving rather than coming in. http://www.pewhispanic.org/2015/11/19/more-mexicans-leaving-than-coming-to-the-u-s/

California is fucked economically. I am in LA now and its very, very expensive. Illegal immigration only affected the working poor of California. The already low paying jobs that the poor in south central LA, east Oakland, etc, as maids, janitors, handimen, nannies, landscaping, short order cooks, car wash, went to the illegals by and large,

It had pretty much no effect on working and middle class jobs. I was a manager in a financial company for several years in LA. You simply don't get illegals even trying to work there. How can they fake a degree, prior work experience, social security, etc.? The ones that were able to were those that came on student or tourist visas. I had a coworker from Liverpool, England who worked several years by overstaying a tourist visa. There are tons of cases of international students on student visas working illegally after graduation as well or continuing to full employment, internships, etc and very few of them are latino. They are Asian, European, Middle Eastern, African.

It is largely the agricultural, restaurant and to some extent the construction industries that kept the illegal immigration job market going. Californians actually benefited from the lower cost of goods and services.

I want to make it clear I want illegal immigration stopped. But I also know its effect has been either overstated or often false. It has had a negative effect on only a specific part of the populace. The most economically disadvantage but this isn't the concern of most who debate about it.

It was Trump members of Congress that are trying to get Trump a Nobel prize https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/05/02/republican-lawmakers-nominate-donald-trump-nobel-peace-prize/573768002/

This is probably the real reason North Korea is willing to negotiate

North Koreans themselves say Trump was not the reason.

This is really about one upsmanship on Obama. Now, Obama didn't deserve the award but he nor Democrats didn't lobby the Nobel prize committee either. Sidenote, Obama was more qualified to receive by making amends with Cuba but his overall body of work internationally (Not closing Gitmo, still in Iraq and Afghanistan, secret missions to Syria,, drone strike) leaves him totally undeserving. Anyway, GOP congressmen nominating him? That is not a class move. The Nobel committee have been doing this for a long time. They know who is doing the work and who should get credit because they actually investigate it. Trump will not get the prize an it has nothing to do with the Swedes being anti Trump. He doesn't deserve it. In fact he was making the situation worse.

Furthermore, lets look at it closely for those advocating him getting the award.

He should get the award for the strategy of threatening a nuclear power, NK, with a war if they don't stop making more bombs? That is what constitutes the criteria to be given the most prestigious award for peace?

Really? Have we lost all sense of decency, moral and ethics? Yes. Sadly, yes.

Presently in LA for a short period of time. Leaving in a couple days. I was also in Texas for a week on some business related matter. LA is fucked. The cost of everything is crazy. Gas prices were over a dollar higher than Texas. You literally can't be anywhere and not spend over $20 minimum. A McDonald's burger is $5, a meal at any basic restaurant (Olive Garden, etc.) will run you $15 if you are lucky. One day metro pass for busses and trains is $7. Rent is crazy. Housing prices are crazy. Its a sellers market. I have a friend who bought a home after 1.5 years of looking, and her budget was 350k. She couldn't find anything. She got corner house in south LA in an area that is still a bit dangerous (the area is gentrifying quickly though) and the house needs a lot of work and she said she was lucky to get it for over 450k. A friend in real estate said he regularly gets all cash offers that are over the asking price. Signs all over the city "We buy Cash For Real Estate' I have friends renting and having to move. $1.500 is roughly standard for borderline areas (borderline good/bad area) for one bedroom flats.

The opiate crisis is visible. I get asked for change by what seems like straight laced middle class white guys at the 7-11 and gas stations near my condo. My brother says he gets asked all the time (he is staying there). The epidemic is truly a middle class scourge. Every millennial seems a bit drugged out. Jobs that when I left 10 years ago were basially latino and black (Cashier at supermarkets, Fed ex, etc) are now by 20 something seemingly college educated of all types.

I now get why Trump was elected. The future is scary for these millenials. They can't find decent jobs. If you have one you hang on for dear life. The very rich are doing very well and will get richer. Everyone else is fucked.

There will be another economic crash. Not if, when. Despite what the government is saying there are deep cracks in the economy. I got back into trading last year. The stock market hit a high end of January and hasn't come close to it since. I was making very good money off that market. Now is helter skelter. The unemployment rate is low because people are taking anything just to eat and they are all one paycheck away from homelessness.

It would do wise for any young American person to research the niches in the economy there is a deep shortage and that shortage has some years to go and find the one you can do the best and do that no matter what it is. Drive trucks (a huge shortage), learn AI (artificial intel), certain computer programs, whatever it is. And do it.

What will be interesting and potentially dangerous is what the reaction will be when the economy crashes again. I fear the mass shootings, etc, will be expanded and we will continue down this ideological abyss that has removed pretty much any moral or ethical standard to hold higher office. Take your pic of potential bubbles that will trigger it. Trillion dollar student loan debt https://www.ft.com/content/a272ee4c-1b83-11e7-bcac-6d03d067f81f, credit card debt https://www.marketwatch.com/story/is-consumer-debt-the-bubble-that-finally-ends-the-economys-strong-run-2018-02-05is at crash levels, so are car loans. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-10/auto-loan-fraud-is-soaring-in-a-parallel-to-the-housing-bubble

I think that's it's a pretty safe bet that the crash won't come before November, 2018. My Congressman, Kevin Yoder, is beholden to the Republican leadership and special interests, particularly the banking industry. When he decided to vote against Obamacare a year ago, I made it my mission to respond negatively to every post that he has made since on Facebook, and he posts about every weekday. He posts regularly about how well the economy is doing since the tax bill passed. I thank him for the deficits incurred by the tax cuts and bankrupting my children and grandchildren. I also point out that the government has the power to manipulate satistics and will do so up to the 2018 midterm elections. In Kansas, the former Governor, Sam Brownback, was able to get passed a far more "let's give the rich all the tax cuts and watch the trickle down economic theory in action" plan than the current tax cuts. At its height, Kansas was producing deficits of around a billion dollars a year. Brownback, leading up to the 2016 Governors election, was able to cook the books enough that it seemed that the the worst had passed. A week after the election, that he barely won, the State auditor issued a report that the deficits were getting worse. That is what I expect this November. The Republican PR Machine will be out in full force for the next 6 months, touting the tax bill, trying to minimize the Democratic gains in the House and Senate. After the election, I could easily see an economic downturn (it's too early for an economic meltdown). So, I get back to KC on Friday. On Monday, I have a meeting scheduled with Social Security to start taking benefits at age 65. My original plan was to wait until I was fully vested at age 66 but I wouldn't put it past the Republicans to change the rules to cut benefits or raise the age to cut the deficit caused by the tax bill. I'm not going to wait to find out.
