U.S. pastor says he will put Mohammed 'on trial' next as NATO chief condemns Koran burning for starting riots

Despite clear evidence that his actions have led to multiple murders and widespread violence in the Middle East, controversial Florida pastor Terry Jones has vowed to step up his provocative campaign against Islam.

The radical pastor said that he was considering putting Islamic prophet Mohammed 'on trial' for his next 'day of judgement' publicity stunt.

His last, in which he oversaw the burning of a copy of the Koran after a six-hour mock trial, has been directly responsible for a wave of violence that began last night and has left 30 people dead and more than 150 injured.

The defiant stance has led General Petraeus, the head of NATO forces in Afghanistan, to join international condemnation of pastor Jones.

The General urged Afghans to understand only a small number of people had been disrespectful to the Koran and Islam.

He said: 'We condemn, in particular, the action of an individual in the United States who recently burned the Holy Koran.

'We also offer condolences to the families of all those injured and killed in violence which occurred in the wake of the burning of the Holy Koran.'

The call comes after a third day of violence in Afghanistan saw at least ten deaths, 78 injured and at least 17 arrests as protesters clash with security forces in Kandahar.

There were also reports of attempted suicide attacks on a U.S. military base in Kabul, but these were not directly linked to Mr Jones's actions.

The vilified pastor remains unrepentant about his actions, and has even hinted that he will take his provocative stance further.

He said in an interview: 'It is definitely a consideration to stage a trial on the life of Mohammed in the future.'

Such a move would trigger further violent protests in the Muslim world - even in more moderate Islamic states.

[color:red]But Mr Jones shows no signs of backing down, refusing to admit the violence is his fault, and apparently proud of his actions.

In an interview at his Dove World Outreach Center, the pastor at least admitted that he was saddened by the Afghan attacks - but added that he would burn the Koran again if given the chance.

He told the New York Times: 'It was intended to stir the pot; if you don’t shake the boat, everyone will stay in their complacency.

[color:red]'Emotionally, it’s not all that easy. People have tried to make us responsible for the people who are killed. It’s unfair and somewhat damaging.' :surprised:

'Did our action provoke them? Of course. Is it a provocation that can be justified? Is it a provocation that should lead to death?

'When lawyers provoke me, when banks provoke me, when reporters provoke me, I can’t kill them. That would not fly.'

It is not surprising that Mr Jones should mention lawyers, banks and reporters as his tormentors.

The pastor, whose church membership has dwindled and who is a hate figure in his own community, is also near broke.

Trump sends investigators to Hawaii to look into Obama

Washington (CNN) – Self-proclaimed birther Donald Trump is now so doubtful of President Obama's birthplace that he's sent a team of his own investigators to Hawaii in hopes of getting to the bottom of the issue.

That's according to Trump himself, who, in an interview with NBC, warned his investigators just might uncover "one of the greatest cons in the history of politics and beyond."

"I have people that have been studying it and they cannot believe what they're finding," Trump said an interview that aired Thursday Morning.

Asked if he has assigned people specifically to search in Hawaii, Trump said, "Absolutely."

The business mogul, who in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll is tied for second place among potential presidential candidates, also suggested the president is involved in an ongoing cover-up over the matter.

"He spent $2 million in legal fees trying on to get away from this issue, and if it weren't an issue, why wouldn't he just solve it?" he said. "I wish he would because if he doesn't, it's one of the greatest scams in the history of politics and in the history, period. You are not allowed to be a president if you're not born in this country. Right now, I have real doubts."

According to a recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation national poll, 72 percent of Americans say that the president was definitely or probably born in the U.S., with one four saying that he was definitely or probably born outside the country. But the survey indicates a partisan divide, with 43 percent of Republicans but only 11 percent of Democrats saying that Obama was definitely or probably born outside the U.S.

In 2008, the Obama campaign produced a certification of live birth that reports his birthplace as Honolulu, Hawaii – a document the Hawaii government says is official evidence of his birth in the state. Among other evidence of Obama's birth there is the fact the hospital where he was born took out ads in two Hawaiian newspapers in 1961 announcing the birth, while current Gov. Neil Abercrombie says he knew Obama's family and remembers his birth.

In the broad interview, Trump also insisted he's more serious than ever about mounting a presidential bid, but said he can't make a final decision until this season of "Celebrity Apprentice" wraps up.

"I hate to say it. I have the No. 1 show on NBC. Is that the correct statement? The "Celebrity Apprentice" is doing great," said Trump. "You're not allowed to have a show on and be a candidate. It's a great show and it's got phenomenal ratings, and until that show is over I can't declare, otherwise NBC would have to take the show off the air and that would be very unfair."

The show is set to wrap up in mid-May.

Even black voters slip from prez

President Obama's approval ratings among black voters plummeted last month to their lowest levels ever, while his support among Hispanics took a tumble in the same period, according to a surprising new poll released yesterday.

Black voters continue to back him by a wide margin, with 85 percent of respondents saying they approved of him in the latest Gallup poll.

But that number dropped a hefty 5 percentage points from last month, marking the lowest rating among that core constituency that he's had since taking office.

He also dropped 5 points among Hispanics, sliding from 59 percent to 54, according to the poll. That number ties his July and August 2010 lows.

The one-two punch among two groups that helped usher him into the White House comes just after he announced the kickoff of his 2012 election campaign.

It also seems to confirm chatter that the commander-in-chief's sudden affinity for Al Sharpton is an attempt to shore up his African-American base.

[color:red]Obama -- in the midst of grueling budget talks -- flew up from DC for the 20th anniversary of Sharpton's National Action Network on Wednesday.

At the event, which was studded with African-American luminaries like Bill Cosby, Stevie Wonder and Martin Luther King III, Obama said much hard work still needs to be done on civil rights.

"We are going to keep fighting until every family gets a shot at the American dream," Obama said.

A day after Obama's visit, most attendees at the four-day conference said it was wise for the president to come.

"What could be a better place to shore up his support?" said Paul Thompson, a Brooklyn real-estate broker.

He blamed Obama's sliding poll numbers on mudslinging.

"You have some groups that say controversial things about him and that affected people in the minority groups," said Thompson.

[color:red]Meanwhile, Fernando Mateo, president of Hispanics Across America, said that Obama seems to have forgotten about Latinos since being elected.

"Until they make Hispanics a priority in the White House or in DC, they [Obama's poll numbers] will continue to drop," said Mateo.

"The immigration issue is a big one. He had the opportunity to create and make changes when he had the House and the Senate, and he did not," he said.

Obama will make a second New York trip later this month.

He'll be here on April 27 for a network of fund-raisers.

A high-roller event will be held at the Manhattan apartment of Jon Corzine, the former New Jersey governor and Goldman Sachs executive.

And a larger fund-raiser is scheduled at a major Midtown Manhattan hotel, a campaign source said. Tickets go for $2,500 per person.
