I had a very good friend who became an Alabama parole officer after he retired from the Army (military police). He used to talk about how unfair he thought the situation was, since several of his parolees had been locked up for smacking around their wife. But he knew for a fact that the wives sometimes smacked around the husband too. Still, the women very seldom got charged ... only the man.

My cop friend tells me that NZ Police policy is that, "In any domestic incident" lock up the man, no matter what happened or who's at fault.

Practically, this is so the woman can look after any kids etc and to separate the couple.

But fairness? there ain't no f*@%&n fairness!

China's "Born in the USA" Frenzy

When Liu Li boarded a plane for the United States, she had a little bit of makeup on, was wearing a loose dress, and had her hair up. She tried to hold her handbag in front of her belly in a natural way, just as the middleman had taught her. She was trying to look as calm as any wealthy Chinese lady would look when travelling abroad. But Liu Li couldn't help feeling terribly nervous: she was six months pregnant when she left for the United States, where she wanted to give birth to an American citizen. (See: "On the Cutting Edge [EM] China's Extraordinary Buildings")

Liu Li knew that going through customs would be a lot easier than obtaining a U.S. visa. In order to obtain the tourist visa that enabled her to go to America for the delivery, she had to carefully choose her clothes, and spend a lot of time practicing her walking and interview techniques. She memorized a host of details about her hotel booking and about famous sight-seeing spots so as to convince the Embassy officer that she was just another Chinese woman going shopping in the States.

The temptation of a 'born in the USA' child

Giving birth to a child abroad is not a privilege reserved to the stars and the very wealthy. An increasing number of expectant middle-class parents also fancy giving their children passports that they can feel proud of. "The return on investment is higher than robbing a bank," the consultancy agent tells women such as Liu. When Chinese children are born in America, they automatically become U.S. citizens. Once they reach 21, their parents will be able to apply for green cards and emigrate.

Book: Liberal Media Distorts News Bias

The liberal bias of the mainstream media tilts so far left that any outlets not in that political lane, like the Drudge Report and Fox News Channel, look far more conservative than they really are, according to a UCLA professor's new book out next month.

In a crushing body blow to the pushers of the so-called "Fox Effect," which claims the conservative media is dragging the left into the center, UCLA political science professor Tim Groseclose in Left Turn claims that "all" mainstream news outlets have a liberal bias in their reporting that makes even moderate organizations appear out of the mainstream and decidedly right-wing to news consumers who are influenced by the slant.

"Fox News is clearly more conservative than ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and National Public Radio. Some will conclude that 'therefore, this means that Fox News has a conservative bias,'" he writes in an advance copy provided to Washington Whispers. "Instead, maybe it is centrist, and possibly even left-leaning, while all the others are far left. It's like concluding that six-three is short just because it is short compared to professional basketball players."

What's more, he says, "this point illustrates a common misconception about the Drudge Report. According to my analysis, the Drudge Report is approximately the most fair, balanced, and centrist news outlet in the United States. Yet, the overwhelming majority of media commentators claim that it has a conservative bias. The problem, I believe, is that such commentators mistake relative bias for absolute bias. Yes, the Drudge Report is more conservative than the average U.S. news outlet. But it is a logical mistake to use that to infer that it is based on an absolute scale."

And in further analysis sure to enrage critics of conservative media, Groseclose determines that Drudge, on a conservative to liberal scale of 0-100, with 50 being centrist, actually leans a bit left of center with a score of 60.4. The reason: Drudge mostly links to the sites of the mainstream media, with just a few written by Matt Drudge himself. "Since these links come from a broad mix of media outlets, and since the news in general is left-leaning, it should not be surprising that the slant quotient of the Drudge Report leans left," he writes.

The author developed a calculation to figure out the "political quotient" to find the bias of media outlets and the average slant of an organization.

[color:red]Groseclose opens his book quoting a well-known poll in which Washington correspondents declared that they vote Democrat 93 percent to 7 percent, while the nation is split about 50-50. As a result, he says, most reporters write with a liberal filter. "Using objective, social-scientific methods, the filtering prevents us from seeing the world as it actually is. Instead, we see only a distorted version of it. It is as if we see the world through a glass — a glass that magnifies the facts that liberals want us to see and shrinks the facts that conservatives want us to see."[/color]

He adds: "That bias makes us more liberal, which makes us less able to detect the bias, which allows the media to get away with more bias, which makes us even more liberal."

Some key points:

"Every mainstream national news outlet in the United States has a liberal bias."

"Supposedly conservative news outlets are not far right. For instance, the conservative bias of [Fox's] Special Report is significantly less than the liberal bias of CBS Evening News."

"Media bias aids Democratic candidates by about 8 to 10 percentage points in a typical election. I find, for instance, that if media bias didn't exist, John McCain would have defeated Barack Obama 56 percent to 42 percent, instead of losing 53-46."

Perhaps the most useful part of his book is the slant ratings of the media. The numbers are based on a conservative-to-liberal 0-100 rating, with 50 being centrist:

- New York Times 73.7.

- CBS Evening News 73.7.

- NPR Morning Edition 66.3.

- U.S. News & World Report 65.8.

- Drudge Report 60.4.

- ABC Good Morning America 56.1.

- Washington Times 35.4.

Left Turn, How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind, published by St. Martin's Press, is due out July 19.

I hope professor is able to keep his job at UCLA.

I'd like to see him do a sequel relating to university profs.

Libtards are rampant in Hollywood. TV shows are full of left wing bullshit. I've stopped watching a couple of shows cuz of it. They ruin some otherwise good shows when inserting a "message".

High school recalls yearbook over photo showing sex act

A Southern California high school has ordered students to return their yearbooks after discovering a picture that showed two students possibly engaged in a sex act in the background of a school dance photo.

Police said they were investigating a 17-year-old boy seen in the Big Bear High School yearbook photo with his hand under the clothing of a 15-year-old girl during a school dance.

Detectives were trying to determine if the boy, who was not identified, had committed the crime of sexual penetration of a minor, said Cynthia Bachman, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The school, in the mountain resort community of Big Bear Lake, about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles, had recovered most of the yearbooks, Bachman said.

Sheriff's deputies were contacting any students who had not turned in their copies "to facilitate editing of the yearbooks to comply with federal and state laws concerning child pornography," according to a department statement.

Bachman said investigators did not believe school officials were complicit in knowingly distributing the photo.

"Because it was an unintentional act, I don't think anybody had any intent to offend anyone, including the juveniles pictured," Bachman said.

The yearbook went out last week and the school issued its recall soon afterward, when the picture was first noticed.

Officials at the school did not return calls.

For students who return the yearbook, the school has offered the option of editing out the photo and giving the yearbook back, or issuing a refund, Bachman said.

Justices: Kids' sex was not a crime

Intercourse between boys ages 11 and 12 was consensual

The Ohio Supreme Court yesterday overturned the rape conviction of a 12-year-old Licking County boy who had sex with an 11-year-old friend.

There was no crime, the justices decided, because both children were younger than 13 and the sex was consensual.

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2011/06/09/justices-kids-sex-was-not-a-crime.html

In a unanimous ruling, the court found that Ohio's statutory rape law is unconstitutionally vague and violated the right to equal protection of the law when one boy was charged but not the other despite both being underage and agreeable. The law prohibits sexual relations with anyone younger than 13.

"When an adult engages in sexual conduct with a child under the age of 13, it is clear which party is the offender and which is the victim. But when two children under the age of 13 engage in sexual conduct with each other, each child is both an offender and a victim, and the distinction between those two terms breaks down," Justice Judith Lanzinger wrote.

Why did the restaurant call the cops? Rediculous. Obviously an oversight.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Raheem-Brock-skips-out-on-27-bar-tab-arrested?urn=nfl-wp2718

Raheem Brock skips out on $27 bar tab, arrested

I believe we have a new winner of the category of "Most Bizarre Arrest of the Offseason." Free-agent defensive end Raheem Brock was arrested on Thursday night for skipping out on a $27 bar tab at the Copacabana in Philadelphia.

It's weirder than just that, though, and the main culprit in the story appears to be Brock's ladyfriend, who might not be the most fun date in the world.

I'm going to have to quote extensively from NFL.com to relay the story accurately. Here we go.

A female server at the Copacabana told NFL.com that it was the behavior of a woman accompanying Brock that led the defensive end to leave without paying his bill.

"It wasn't even (Brock) that was the issue," the server said. "It was the female he was with, getting angry and wanting to leave.

"The female was mad (because) she wanted something that wasn't on the menu. So she went across the street and got something from another restaurant."

When a manager told her she couldn't bring food from another restaurant inside the Copacabana, the woman became further enraged and Brock and his friends were ultimately asked to leave.

"She got a little colorful and a little angry with me," the server said. "I told my manager that she refuses to wrap it up and refuses to (stop) eating."

Charming! She sounds like a keeper.

As for the bill, Brock and Miss Congeniality eventually agreed to leave the restaurant, but they did so before paying a $27 bar tab. That's when the restaurant called the police. Brock was arrested outside for theft of services and resisting arrest.

NFL.com makes no mention of the woman being arrested or charged with anything, and isn't that just the way things always seem to go?

Brock spent last year with the Seahawks after spending the previous eight with the Colts. He'll be a free agent when we have football again, and it sounds like he might want to consider embracing free agency on the dating scene, too.
