Wary of Ebola, Dallas parents pull kids from school

DALLAS — Parents rushed to get their children from school Wednesday after learning that five students may have had contact with the Ebola patient in a Dallas hospital, as Gov. Rick Perry and other leaders reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm.

The patient, identified by The Associated Press as Thomas Eric Duncan of Liberia, arrived in the U.S. on Sept. 20 to visit family. Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson said county officials suspect that 12 to 18 people may have had contact with Duncan.

“Right now, the base number is 18 people, and that could increase,†he said. Thompson said more details are expected by Thursday afternoon. The number includes five students at four schools, Dallas school district Superintendent Mike Miles said.

“This case is serious,†Perry said during a news conference at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, where Duncan is being treated. “Rest assured that our system is working as it should. Professionals on every level on the chain of command know what to do to minimize this potential risk to the people of Texas and of this country.â€

Miles said DISD officials learned Wednesday morning that five students at four different schools — Tasby Middle School, L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary School, Dan D. Rogers Elementary and Conrad High School — had come in contact with Duncan. Lowe Elementary is also being watched because it connects to Tasby.

“Since none of the students had symptoms, I’m pretty confident that none of the kids were exposed,†Miles said.

At L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary, parents pulled their children out of school early Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m scared,†said parent Kia Collins, who has four children at the school ages 5-11. “I may keep them home all week.â€

DISD officials said they planned to have counselors and translators reaching out to parents — 32 languages are spoken just at Conrad High School.

“That’s one of the reasons we’re here is we don’t want misinformation getting out there,†Miles said. “We found out this morning and then we had a press conference.â€

He urged parents to keep their children in school, but some were wary. Marcie Pardo said she picked up her 8-year-old daughter, Soriah, within minutes of being notified by school officials.

“To find out this is a school where it is happening, what are the odds?†Pardo said. “I’m sure there could have been some kind of contact somewhere.â€

A letter to parents of children at Hotchkiss, 6929 Town North Drive, said the school was notified Wednesday that “one of our students may have had contact with an individual who was recently diagnosed with the Ebola virus.â€

The letter goes on to say the student is not showing symptoms, has been told to stay home from school and is under observation by the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department.

“... There is nothing to suggest that the disease was spread to others, including students and staff,†the letter says.

The Ebola virus is not spread through the air, but through contact with bodily fluids of victims — sweat, blood, saliva and other secretions

The Public Health Agency of Canada has deleted information from its official website which indicated that the “airborne spread†of Ebola was strongly suspected by health authorities, amidst efforts by officials in Texas to calm concerns about the first outbreak of the virus in America.

The image below shows the original Public Health Agency of Canada website’s information page on the Ebola virus as it appeared on August 20th compared to how it appears now...

Under a section entitled “mode of transmission,†the original text stated that, “airborne spread among humans is strongly suspected, although it has not yet been conclusively demonstrated.â€

However, the amended text states that, “airborne transmission has not been demonstrated between non-human primates.â€

Both passages refer to a 2012 study by Canadian scientists which indicated that the Ebola virus could be transmitted by air between different species...

Portland Christmas Tree Bomb Plotter Sentenced to 30 Years

A Somali-American man will serve 30 years in prison for plotting to detonate a massive car bomb at a crowded 2010 Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, Ore.

Mohamed Mohamud, 23, was arrested in November 2010 after repeatedly trying to detonate the bomb, which was parked amid thousands of people, including children.

Prosecutors asked that Mohamud be sentenced to 40 years, describing in detail his plot and his motivations. FBI agent in undercover operatives to monitor him after his father contacted law enforcement to express concern about Mohamud's radicalization, a prosecution sentencing memo said.

In writings and recordings, "Mohamud had made it clear he thought terrorism targeting Americans was 'a justified response to what he perceived as the killing of innocent Muslims in Afghanistan by the United States and its allies.'"

Defense attorneys suggested a 10-year sentence, arguing that Mohamud has taken responsibility for his actions, expressed remorse and tried to change his life.

Prosecutors challenged the sincerity of those actions, saying he continues to argue entrapment – a defense rejected by jurors who convicted him in January 2013. Mohamud, the sentencing memo says, "attempted to kill thousands of people in the name of his distorted and radical view of Islam."

Defense attorneys agreed, to some extent.

"There was no question that Mohamed was involved in Islamic extremism before any government contact," they wrote. But he didn't start planning the attack before undercover agents reached out to him and he would not have been able to build a bomb without their assistance.

But blowing up the lighting ceremony of a 70-foot Christmas tree was Mohamud's idea, and the undercover handlers repeatedly pressed him about the carnage that would result, including the deaths of so many children.

"I want whoever is attending that event to be, to leave either dead or injured," Mohamud said in a recorded conversation.

Despite such statements, and the defense acknowledgment of Mohamud's intent, some American Islamist groups, led by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), minimize the case, arguing the FBI concocted the case to create "a sensational story."

FBI agents were drawn to Mohamud after he wrote four articles for Jihad Recollections, an online magazine later tied to al-Qaida, and posted on other jihadi web sites. In addition, before he tried repeatedly to go to Yemen for jihad training.

At the tree lighting, Mohamud tried repeatedly to detonate an 1,800-pound bomb packed into a van. FBI agents rendered it inert, and arrested Mohamud after the failed attempts.

Prosecutors downplayed any statements of remorse and argued that should not lead to a shorter prison sentence: "There is simply no 'reliable' evidence in this case that defendant will pose less of a danger following a lengthy term of incarceration than other aspiring jihadists who have been intercepted, convicted, and sentenced..."

Pierson failed to provide fresh start for Secret Service that administration wanted

The resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson and the launch of a top-to-bottom review of the agency Wednesday are an acknowledgment by President Obama of what he has long denied: that the force charged with protecting him is in deep turmoil and struggling to fulfill its sacred mission.

The 6,700-member agency, long an elite class of skilled professionals who prized their jobs, now suffers from diminished luster and historically high turnover rates. Officers in charge of protecting the White House say they have grown resentful at being belittled by their bosses and routinely forced to work on off-days. Some agents who have sworn to take a bullet for the president and his family have little faith in the wisdom or direction of their senior-most leaders. Those chronic woes have been amplified in recent days by revelations of a string of humiliating security lapses that have raised concerns about the president’s safety and prompted the agency’s biggest crisis since President Ronald Reagan was shot outside the Washington Hilton three decades ago.

...

In the spring, Pierson was irate at what she considered the excessive security measures her team had planned for the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, which Obama hosted this summer, demanding that it dismantle extra layers of fencing and reopen closed streets, according to two agency supervisors. Supervisors who had mapped out the security plan said they were taken aback when Pierson, who worked during high school at Walt Disney World as a costumed character and park attendant, said: “We need to be more like Disney World. We need to be more friendly, inviting.â€

Not a good 5-6 year stretch for the Secret Service. Going from stiffing hookers in South America (and either Bergium or the Netherlands) to security concerns at the White House and on Presiential routes. I'm pretty sure that the present (just fired) director was brought in to curb the supposed macho, sexist culture of SS agents. I guess that whoever hired her should have told her that curbing these excesses was not going to be done at the expense of how it was perceived that secutity should be handled. It sounds like a near impossible position to fill and please those that count.

I spent one night in Little Rock, Arkansas - and it is dead !

Pentagon program delivered Humvee, rifle and kayak to Arkansas coroner

"Doug Wortham used a Defense Department giveaway program for law enforcement to stock his office with an assault rifle, a handgun and a Humvee – even through the people in his custody are in no condition to put up a fight.

They’re dead.

Wortham is the Sharp County, Arkansas, coroner. He says the Humvee helps him navigate the rugged terrain of the Ozarks foothills, but he struggled to explain why he needs the surplus military weapons he acquired more than two years ago."

Drug War Asininity: Cops Raid Georgia Man’s Home After Mistaking Okra for Weed

Cartersville, GA — Heroic Georgia police task force, in an effort to keep the citizens of Cartersville safe from a plant, descended onto the house of a man who’d dare grow vegetables in his own yard.

Dwayne Perry was awaken Wednesday night to a helicopter hovering over his house and deputies and a K-9 unit in his front yard.

“They were strapped to the gills,†Perry said. “I was scared actually at first, because I didn’t know what was happening.â€

The chopper belonged to the heroic task force created by the Georgia governor’s office which is setup to kidnap and cage those who’d dare try to do with their own bodies as they wish.

The overzealous and highly incompetent task force mistook an okra plant, which has five leaves for the cannabis plant which has seven.

“We’ve not been able to identify it as of yet. But it did have quite a number of characteristics that were similar to a cannabis plant,†said Georgia State Patrol Capt. Kermit Stokes.

Whether this was a cannabis plant or not, the very idea of sending in heavily armed militarized police to kidnap and cage a person for cultivating any plant is criminal.

“Here I am, at home and retired and you know I do the right thing,†Perry said. “Then they come to my house strapped with weapons for no reason. It ain’t right.â€

“The more I thought about it, what could have happened? Anything could have happened,†Perry said.

Perry is right, we’ve seen horrid examples of trigger and grenade happy SWAT teams raid innocent people and leave a trail of maimed and dead adults and children behind; all in the name of this immoral war to control people’s body and mind.

Amazingly enough, the authorities actually apologized, however Perry doesn’t think that goes far enough. He is still receiving calls from neighbors asking why his house was raided and believes the damage to his reputation has already happened.
