Punter Out Of Sydney Test

"Australia captain Ricky Ponting is out of the last Ashes Test in Sydney after fresh problems emerged with his injury.

Ponting, 36, first fractured the little finger of his left hand during the third Test in Perth and played in Melbourne with it heavily strapped.

But an X-ray on Wednesday revealed it had been damaged again during his side's defeat in the fourth Test.

Vice-captain Michael Clarke will be the skipper in Sydney next week, with Usman Khawaja coming in for his Test debut.

The setback now means Australia must attempt to square the series without their figurehead and best batsman of the last decade."

He may be "their figurehead and best batsman of the last decade" but he's also one of their worst batsmen in this series (he's 9th in the Aussie batting averages and 6th in terms of runs scored for the last 4 tests!) so I don't see how it can do the Aussies much harm as I doubt anyone else can do much worse?

The 5th Test, Stumps Day 1

Aus 134 - 4

"Australia slid from 105-1 to 134-4 as England ended day one of the final Ashes Test on top in rainy Sydney.

Tim Bresnan was the most successful bowler, taking 2-47 as England made the most of overhead cloud cover and a pitch offering some seam movement.

Rain took the players off for 90 minutes in the middle of the day and England picked up two late wickets before a second and final stoppage.

Michael Clarke made just four in his first Test as Australia's captain."
