This whole thing is far more complicated than most people realize and women rarely give men the credit they deserve. Unlike women, who basically just have to remain immobile until male ejaculation, men are responsible for wars, weapon maintenance in harsh environments, producing sperm and with their erections the very survival of the species. But you still need a trigger, e.g. someone that turns you on. If I end up with a companion that turns out to be a starfish, or turns out to be a 'poor fit' in terms of personality, I can till end up with equipment failure.
