BaronTT
My wife's accountant said that she needs to pay a higher tax rate because she's married to me. We filed separate tax returns so I see no reason why she has to pay a higher rate. Is what he says true?
Nervous God
I pay LOWER taxes because I am married to a Thai, no idea how it affects Thais, but odd I pay lower
ThaiHome
I believe the reason she has to pay more tax is because if both persons have income, only one of them (the husband) can claim the standard deduction (40% of gross to 60k max). Many middle class Thais do not register the marriage for this reason. If you don't register the marriage, both parties can claim the standard deduction. Nervous God
Married though I get to claim kids etc as well, so it works out cheaper on a combined income.
BaronTT
She implied that it's a lot higher than this. More like getting taxed at a 37% marginal rate. I'm anxious to see the final numbers.
BaronTT
Update. Sunbelt Legal mentioned that marrieds can file separately. PWC's Thailand tax booklet, available online, also says marrieds can file separately. So it appears that my wife's accountant may have been trying to get some more money from her, as the accountant is on very good terms with the government tax folks. Wife will be changing accountants. Nervous God
I'd VERY strongly suggest getting a second opinion
BaronTT
I'm not sure what you mean. So far, 1 person, her accountant, says she has to file for higher taxes. Sunbelt, PWC, and my work place say the she files separately. So I did get 4 'expert' opinions in total. So what is your point about a second opinion? No need, separate tax returns are fine, always were, always will be Good to see other sites read this one and make editorials on it
