A new post mortem has been ordered by UK authorities as part of an investigation into the death of a tourist who died in a Dubai prison cell.

A third autopsy and fresh set of forensic tests will be carried out on the body of 39-year-old handyman Lee Brown, who was found dead in Bur Dubai Police Station on April 12.

Brown’s sister-in-law Susanne told 7DAYS: “A completely independent post mortem is being carried out here and if we want, the family could also have its own carried out.

“The coroner has opened and adjourned an inquest this week while all the information and reports are compiled from Dubai and from the UK.â€

The Brit holidaymaker’s family is concerned he may have been mistreated while in police custody.

The police and the UAE Attorney General’s office have carried out two post mortem investigations and strongly deny any suggestion Brown was physically abused while in custody. The official cause of death is suffocation after Brown choked on his own vomit.

Susanne and Lee’s brother Steve flew to Dubai two weeks ago to claim his body and meet British Embassy and Dubai Public Prosecution officials, but they say many of their questions remain unanswered.

She said: “We want to find out the truth and we hope the inquest will make sure an investigation is carried out.â€

Dubai Police say Brown violently resisted arrest when officers were called to the Burj Al Arab hotel after an alleged assault on a chambermaid.
