And deals with something that has made me think.

LOS is becoming less and less attractive for us.

I merely state this:

I am looking for happiness in Laos

Someone I know is looking in Cambodia

Someone I know is looking in Singapore (perhaps)

The land of smiles is fast becoming the land of slights.

This may be why so many of us are unhappy with the state of things.

On an interesting note, I see Thaksin is promising to be back before the end of the year, just about the time I'll be there, I'll bring my camera!

Stick's mood seems to have changed since he lost so much weight, but I have thought the same about Thailand from almost the day I landed in that country, their culture and persona is self evident for all to see.

However, Stick comments, "You're farang and no matter how hard you try, you'll never be Thai". Why would you want to?

If you go there, don't fall in love, and if you do, never react in a way a westerner thinks is appropriate, because Thai logic does not dictate or require a common sense approach, logic is always a casualty IMO

BB, I will have to bow to your experience, I very rarely, if at all, read Stickman's webpage, just far to many dazzling adds for my like (and it doesn't come with porno movies) ... I like LOS and I like Thai people but I just don't get their behavioural traits ... as Stick's column states, you can be 100% straight up and a great citizen all for nought, so, why bother sometimes, just be good to one self, treat others fairly and if something goes wrong, don't kid mak about it, just move on

If I was the teacher, I would have sued the pricks and sued the next school if they in turn sacked him, and then thought about a teaching stint in another asian country, but heck, that's me

I used to have a love affair with Thailand but in more recent years its turned into a bit of a love/hate relationship. But to me its still a place I'd like to live in again for all its faults its still got a lot going for it.

I think if one can either be retired or work elsewhere and avoid the hassles of driving and car/motorbike ownership in Thailand it goes a long way to avoiding lots of the potential negatives?

Simie.

Since I have become a regular visitor to the Kingdom I keep on saying : If you love this country and want it to stay that way then do not settle there . I do not question that the Thais behave as explained in his last column but as an occasional quality tourist I consider it " up to them ".

This has nothing to do with LOS especially. Asian countries/societies are more or less xenophob (even without playing the xylophon :content: )

Therefore in probably most (all?) Asian countries you will never be able to go native. And as ozpharlap said: Why would you want to?

Most of the Aisan countries are in their core very conservative, hierarchal, repressive societies. Why should we want to become a part of these systems? As a Farang, Barang, Gaijin we have the advantage that we have to play by the (unwritten) rules only to a certain limited

(rules of law have to be followed more or less closely of course depending on the country).

This question of " fitting in " and being treated like a local is not unique to LOS.It might be something many (most?)expats would like but in reality its not going to happen.A familly friend married an Italian POW after the war,and despite having lived in the UK for over 60 years and being well liked he was always thought of as " the Italian ".....

I have been reading stick’s column since he started it. The only constant themes through the whole time has been his incessant ethnocentrism and farang paranoia that all Thais hate him and are just waiting for a chance to get his money (which is the most important thing to stick).

The entertainment value can be good.
