unit731
The A bomb certainly affected the end of the war. More died in the fire bombings of Tokyo. The real menace and worry from Japan was the Russians entering the war. Old Joe waited til near the end to jump in. The Russians still remembered the Russo-Japanese War 1904/5. The Kuril Islands are still a bone of contention today. Annexed from Japan to Russia after WWII. .
dean
James Brady, president Reagan's press secretary, who was shot in the head when Reagan was shot, and who was a vocal supporter of gun control laws for the rest of his life, has died at age 73. candyfloss
Uncle Kev is dead. It is with a profound sense of sadness that I must advise the Board Members that my Uncle Kev has passed away. He was hit by an Irn-Bru truck on his way to the Bookies. He leaves behind an Auntie Betty, and an impressionable young nephew. He was a visionary. An enlightened soul, ahead of his time. A selfless and tireless humanitarian, whose only purpose was to serve. I'm now on the lookout for a replacement Mentor. Munchmaster?
The_Munchmaster
Sorry to hear about your Uncle Kev Flossie. Never met him but sounds like he was a great guy. As for becoming your new mentor, haven't I already taught you everything you know?! Would you have survived Bangkok in the mid 90's without my guiding hand? SpiceMan
Death of the world’s most deluded woman: Umm Nidal, mother of “martyrs†What kind of mother would send her young son off to die in a suicide bombing of children—knowing he would die—and then rejoice and pass out candy after his death and the deaths of other innocents he took with him? What kind of mother would lobby her other sons to become “martyrs,†too? A religious mother, of course. And you know what religion we’re talking about. Umm Nidal (“mother of the struggleâ€: real name Maryam Farhat), who died three days ago at the age of 64, is a hero to Palestinians. That’s because three of her six sons were “martyrsâ€. The youngest, Muhammed, was only 17 when he died in a suicide attack against an Israeli military academy (the mother had encouraged him to engage in this “jihadâ€), another made explosives targeting civilians and was blown up by one of his drones, and the third was killed by Israeli intelligence. After Muhammed died (taking with him five Israeli students and wounding 23), she thanked Allah and handed out boxes of chocolates and halvah. She was later elected to the Palestinian parliament. Nidal’s funeral was attended by thousands of Palestinians and many dignitaries, including the Palestinian prime minister. On the eve of Obama’s visit, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas paid homage to Nidal and gave her a special award, the “Order of Sacrifice.†
dean
I'll assume that she died of natural causes and not by martyrdom
Flashermac
Why is it that only humble proles die as suicide bombers? Why don't the leaders of Hamas, the Taliban etc blow themselves up?

Flashermac
Jimmy Roosevelt, FDR's son, commanded a Marine Raider Battalion in the South Pacific in WWII. Of course, that was "back in the old days". His father pissed off a lot of people before the war by giving his son a direct commission as a Marine Corps lieutenant colonel. To his credit, Jimmy resigned it for WWII and accepted a "humble" captain's commission in the Marine Corps Reserve. He had an excellent war record and finished the war a colonel. I remember when he was a Democratic Congressman from a "safe district" in California. He also caused a stir when he backed Nixon's reelection in 1972. (You can't say he wasn't interesting. His 3rd wife stabbed him 8 times with his Marine Corps KA-BAR when she was pissed off at him.) http://www.ww2gyrene...toalbum_33.htm
