The last surviving actor in the movie "Casablanca," Madeleine LeBeau, has died in Spain at age 92. She played Humphary Bogart's girlfriend who he dumped for Ingred Bergman. She later joined in the singing of Le Marsaille at Rick's Cafe (she says Vive La France). In real life, she and her Jewish husband fled the Nazis as Paris fell in June, 1940. She returned to France after the war and was in the movie "8 & 1/2".

Safer's reporting of U.S. soldiers burning down a Vietnamese village in 1965 helped to make his career but also brought death threats against him and hatred from many in the Pentagon. I don't think that Safer was very popular with the troops after 1965.

Not many reporters were, since they usually sought out the "sensational". There wasn't much interest in showing the ordinary day-after-day war. The 1968 Tet offensive was a disaster for the communists that took them years to recover from, but the press turned it into a PR victory for them.

There were exceptions - Sean Flynn, Tim Page and their like - but most reporters I saw in RVN were overweight creeps in tailor-made camouflage fatigues that were better than anything we had. They'd fly in on a Huey, spend an hour or less taking photos and getting a few quotes, then fly right back to safety and comfort. When the press finally learned that my battalion was in a place no Americans were supposed to be and had been getting hit hard, were had "journalists" flying in and out on choppers like shuttle buses and spending at most 30 minutes on the ground. Safer wasn't one of that type, but he definitely was looking for the unusual, which hardly gave a balanced picture..
