The global surf community is celebrating the life of Australia's first world champion, Bernard 'Midget' Farrelly, and according to those who knew him, no-one would have been amused than the man himself.

Farrelly passed away on Sunday aged 71. The exact cause of death is not yet known, but he did battle cancer at various stages of his life.

Farrelly became a household name shortly after winning the hotly contested Makaha International in Hawaii in 1962, before cementing his place in history by winning the 1964 World Championships at Manly.
