Outstanding Flood Photos

Almost all of the pics of "flooded Bangkok" in fact are not of Bangkok. The only parts of the city to see any floodwater thus far are over near the river, where floods are common enough. I should know, since I used to live there. :p

Wonder what tomorrow will bring. There are almost no cars on the road - buses infrequent and taxis rare. Somchai and all of the other drivers have gone home to Roi Et, leaving just the Bangkok cabbies here. The govmt should pass a law saying that everyone who has left Bangkok in its time of need if forbidden to return ... at least with their cars!

Read The Nation editorial - saying most of it COULD have ben prevented, if the government hadn't been acting like farking idiots. They were more concerned about getting Takky pardon and punishing the military than serving the people - even when warned that floods were coming.

Meanwhile, back at the swamp ...

Flood-high over the next two days

People living along both sides of the Chao Phraya near Bangkok have been told to brace for overflow from the river as the water level will rise over the next two days.

Thongthong Chandrangsu, spokesman for the government's Flood Relief Operations Centre (Froc), said on Thusday the level of the water spreading through many parts of Bangkok was rising because there was more water flowing in than being drained out.

Over the next two days the river might overflow and flood riverside houses, so residents were advised to move their belongings to higher places, if they could, he said.

Bangkok deputy governor Thirachon Manomaipiboon asked the military to provide protection for city workers in conflict with local people over a flood dyke in Lam Luk Ka area of Pathum Thani province.

The Highways Department will break open some roads east of Bangkok to accelerate the water flow into the sea, he said.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said he did not expect that all districts in the capital would be flooded.

"As the person in charge of Bangkok, I believe that the water will not flood every district of Bangkok and some districts might not be inundated," MR Sukhumbhand said.

He said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is doing its best to protect the capital.

"We're considering whether we should order an evacuation of Thawi Watthana district as the flood situation there is worrying," the governor said after more water surged into Thawi Watthana canal.

Royal Irrigation Department former chief Thira Wongsaengnak said all agencies involved were now of the same opinion, that the floodwater should be drained into the sea through various canals east of Bangkok.

He said that inside Bangkok the floodwater had flowed over Vibhavadi Rangsit highway to Lak Si intersection and Phahon Yothin highway to Big C superstore in Saphan Mai area and Bhumibol Hospital.

At Don Muang airport, two dykes had collapsed under the pressure of the strong flood flow, reports said.

This morning, the flood destroyed a protection wall in the north of Don Muang airport, inundating the airport's car park where many people had left their vehicles parked hoping they would be safe from the run-off from the North.

The water level rose quickly, prompting airport officials to switch off electricity at the main breaker, the reports said.

This afternoon, flood water from Vibhavadi Road broke through another barricade at Don Muang, allowing a continual flow of water into the airport.

Airport authorities rushed to move their vehicles to higher ground.

The BMA earlier today issued an announcement advising people living in Sai Mai district to evacuate urgently to safe ground.

Governor Sukhumbhand said the water level in Khlong Song had risen by 16 centimetres to 2.64 metres and in Khlong Tawee Wattana by 20cm to 2.38m.

This indicated that a large amount of northern run-off was flowing through the area into the Chao Phraya River.

For their own safety, the people in Sai Mai area were advised to evacuated as soon as possible, he said.

MR Sukhumbhand said the most affected districts now were Bang Phlat, Don Mueang, Sai Mai and Thawi Watthana.

A total of 7,503 people had sought refuge at temporary evacuation centres at BMA-run schools, he said.

Flooding still prevails in 26 provinces and the flood toll stands at 373 dead and two missing, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Wibul Sanguanpong said on Thursday.

The 26 provinces are Sukhothai, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Sakhon, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, Kalasin, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri.

Bangladesh sending US$1m in relief

Bangladesh has pledged US$1million (Bt30.5 million) in humanitarian relief assistance for flood victims in Thailand.

The pledge has been made as a gesture of solidarity with flood-affected Thais and in view of the longstanding friendship with Thailand.

Prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has instructed his government officials to send the relief materials immediately to Thailand.

How do you like them apples?

Doing a drive about; Bang Na, On Nut, Udon Suk, etc and no water to be seen. All klongs were normal levels, not about to be flooding :dunno:

Just got back from Ngamwongwan. A little water bubbling up through the sewers, but that is all. Klong Prapha leaking a bit onto Prachachuen Road just south of Ngamwongwan ... only a few inches deep and even then only in the low spots.

It is Friday and people were making a run on The Mall, plenty of shelves emptying out. No drinking water to be seen, except more expensive foreign brands (allegedly from artesian wells or whatever). Went into the fresh market down the roads - almost no vendors and those very low on produce.
