Pom Michael
Planning a family trip to Chiang Rai - never been actually. Any one with updated info on places to stay, things to do, etc.... 3 Nights in mid December (not during the holiday dates of 5th / 10-12th) if that makes a difference. Julian2
Plenty of reasonably priced hotels in the city centre, Wang Come, Diamond Park Inn, Wiang Inn to name a few. Google around, you can get some good deals on the 'net. If you're bringing family think about hiring a car for a couple of days if you're not bringing one, most of the mom and pop travel agents have cars and a driver/guide isn't very much more expensive. Things to see are Doi Mae Salong... the old Chinese town, MaeSai/Tachilek... the Burmese border crossing (good shopping on both sides) and the Mekong River towns... the Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong. Round Chiang Rai you have the temples and hills tribe stuff.
Mekong
Phu Chaisai comes recommended, not been there myself but the Girlfriend is from CR and rates the place for families. We may be heading there ourselves for a few days break soon once I have court cases in Bangkok out of the way.
Julian2
People looking for something of this quality with better access to the city should consider the Le Meridien Hotel. River front with nice grounds and good food in farang managed restaurants.

Pom Michael
For no real reason, decided to go to Chiang Mai instead. Got a good deal on TG (even cheaper than Air Asia) for 4 seats so loading up the family truckster and heading out this week. No real plans except to get away from Bangkok. Plenty of hotels on offer in CNX - looking now to book one.
Julian2
Plenty to do in Chiang Mai. If you're there on a Sunday don't miss the market inside the moat, entering from the ThaPae Gate.
The_Munchmaster
Plenty of reasonably priced hotels in the city centre, Wang Come, Diamond Park Inn, Wiang Inn to name a few... Have you tried Wang King?
Julian2
Not in recent years... you might not be surprised to hear that the Wang Come is near Mae Kok though. (I'm not wang king about that either). The marker is the pub and the golf club is named after the river.
