that is quite naive, even coming from you HH !

to put "liberal" and "socialist" in the same sentence is not really knowing the meaning of it.....

Let me explain how it is in the U.S. Socialists and communists will not admit to such characterizations, particularly if they are campaigning for public office. They even avoid the label of being "liberal". They hide behind their preferred "progressive" brand. The only thing "progressive" about them is their desire to "progress" toward a socialist or communist state.

Maybe the Turks could take it over. :hmmm:

The Turks are doing extremely well, they have a bigger growth rate than any West-European country.

I guess you know that the Greeks and Turks are archenemies since the rise of the Ottoman empire.

The term 'Liberal' was demonized in the '80s during the Reagan era. Decades past the term progressive was the same as Liberal. The terms are interchangeable to me because their goals were always the same. BOTH ideals have their place in America. Just one dominating completely would be disastrous for America.

Liberals, in American history, advanced us into a moderinzed, civiiized country. Conservatives kept the fring of the Liberalism in check. Visa versa as well. It was Liberals that fought for the abolition of slavery, the right of women to vote, fought McCarthyism, ended Jim Crow and ushered in Civil Rights. Conservatives, have helped us from having an open southern border, and kept the pressure of being financially prudent and from having a runaway federal government.

However, we have found that the extreme of both brings ruin. The Bush years were the fringe. California is seeing how years of too much liberalism in the budget has hurt them.

Economically, Turkey is a fit for Europe. The Turks want desperately to be in the EU. They have a pretty good PM right now.

My guess about the hesitancy has to be the social ramifcations. They are a secular moslem state but a moslem state nonetheless. Pre-911, it would have been a plus showing Europe as open-minded. Post 911, they are viewed warily.

Economically Turkey is strong, but in regard to it's political structure it is underdeveloped. For example jurisdiction is under the control of the government, police is overly corrupt, the military has an unhealthy influence, and human rights are frequently ignored (jailing of intelectual critics, tourture by police, repressing Kurds, e.g.).

Also, Turkey would be the first Muslim country in basicly Christian Europe.

After the disaster with underdevloped Greece, Europe should be careful to add another country which is below the standard of north-west European countries.

Albania isn't a Muslim country? (... though I don't think the EU wants it either.)

Albania has applied for membership in 2009. I guess due to the current disasters they will have to change their country considerably for to be accepted.

In Germany most people don't know anything about the country, since it had been isolated for decades. And it has a bad reputation for being a Mafia country, whose gangs are spreading in Europe.

In Germany Albanian gangs entered the areas of drug trade and prostitution in Hamburg with extreme violence. At the Reeperbahn they ended with frequent murders of opponents the "romantic" phase of organized crime, where some of the old school pimps were kind of local heros, due to their interesting personalities.
