are there meter taxis or a counter for prepaid taxis or what is the best way to get to a downtown hotel?

Tiny airport -- after you pick up luggage there's a generic taxi booth before the exit, you won't miss it. They charge a little over a hundred baht flat to whatever hotel/place you're going in CM.

 

I didn't see anyone try and bypass them and go try and grab a taxi outside on their own, but maybe.

Some hotels have vans that will take u to the hotel free. Check with the hotel u will be staying at.

thanks; can't check with the hotel as I did not book. now we have the booth for prepaid taxis. what about meter taxi? are there any at all in Chiang Mai (there were no meter taxis around when I was last there, but that was a couple of years ago...)

Went to Chiang Mai last month. No meter taxi's, unless you manage to catch 1 on the his way back to the airport.

was myself there in the meanwhile. hotel pick up and drop off was 200 THB each, not free. has a booth for prepaid taxis. taxis in town is up to negotiation...expect to pay more than in Bangkok!
