How Can We (Re-)Activate The Board?

Recommended Posts

I love living in a part of town where there is no other Farang within at least a mile in any direction. Plus those few outside of that are working at regular jobs and not leeching. No one bothers me and the Thais are generally respectful, treating me as a curiousity, not someone to try to rip off. People immediately start speaking in Thai to me, not Pidgin English.

When I go to the tourist areas, I keep my guard up and only go to places I know. Saves me a world of problems. Folks who live in the tourist ghettos must be daft, but there are plenty of them. I know people who have lived here 15 or 20 years and yet can barely even order a meal in Thai. No desire to learn it either. :hmmm:

Flashermac - that's you next door isn't it?

Nice one!

I'm a poor man. But even if I wasn't, I couldn't bring myself to live anywhere near the tourist towns.

I really don't want to be anywhere near some dodgy fuckers trying to catapult themselves into an imagined higher social class with the aid of a Vigo, viagra and a threat of violence.

I respect them nonetheless - I would just like that respect to be reciprocated. This is a nice town and I live in a nice neighbourhood. I don't want to see fat, aging, English skinheads wearing wifebeater vests when I go to the Mom and Pop store.

Not much to ask, is it?

Sayjann - it would a great pleasure. The honour would be mine, sincerely. (I live a long way from Helltown and Pleasure City but near enough when needs must.)

I always appreciate conversations in English despite my apparent disdain for it.

You are more than welcome down here.

it would also be a pleasure for me to have a beer or two with you after all the years.

sadly i have never been to that part of Thailand and have no real wish to.

i am in my comfort zone on Phuket and would be a fish out of water anywhere else.

i once spent 3 days on Samui, but i had Limbo to look after me the whole time....

Well, should you change your mind and move out of that comfort zone to check out the Eastern Seaboard, then I'm sure I could convert you at least a little.

Was that the same Limbo that once sent me a rather threatening Private Message about 5 years ago? I do believe it was. I wasn't impressed.

Come here - we aren't bothered by shithead gangsters like they are on Koh Samui!

Anyway - I kid you not. As long as I am on free time I would love to show you some nice places. Yes, even in Pattaya. In fact, there are some really nice places in Pattaya.

I don't believe, Limbo is one of nicest persons I know both on this board and in IRL. If he did he must had been utterly provoked by you.

Also I think it's bad manners to refer to a PM....especially 5 years after.

Jesus, CS - somewhere between Stick's ongoing pessimism and your post, I'm not sure I even want to set foot in Thailand again, much less live there.

That's not very sexy, is it?

:scared:

Also - 'sex' may sell, but is another generic Thailand swingers board really necessary? Nightlife is a part of life - and that's it. A part. It's not the main thrust of existence (perhaps a better choice of words is in order), and the boards that focus solely on that are frankly - pretty fucking boring after the novelty wears off.

I stand by my point - post material that's worth reading and of interest, and then you got something of value. It might be sexy - it might be on eating crickets - who gives a fuck. Just let people write what's interesting to them and related to Thailand.

I arrived later than many of the expat regulars on the board and was pretty much finished with the mongering side of life when I did.

Forums were a useful and more reliable way of meeting people and picking up information than hanging in bars, Thai360 was great for this for a while but because I lived a long way from the action the people I spoke to never became more than online acquaintances.

We seldom get the starry eyed new member now, eager to experience it all and desperately in need of sage advice, and even if I was asked I'm about ten years out of date.

It's rare that I see a new topic I'm interested now and unfortunately there's people I can't be bothered responding to regardless of what their shiny new board name is.

I've moved on a couple of times but there's a few people here I like to talk to so eventually I wander back.

As Cent says, the malaise is pretty well widespread through the expat forums, ThaiVisa has gone even more boring than ever and TeakDoor works on occassions but is not for the faint of heart, as at least one of our disaffected members found out... boy that DirtyDog has a rough mouth on him... :D

What is needed is a way of getting people's interest and maintaining it, a difficult task when, as has been pointed out here already, we don't have a lot in common anymore.

If nothing else, it costs a helluva lot more than it used to when the sterling and yanqui dollar bought lots of baht. With not as many people coming here, there are going to be that much fewer interested in a Thailand board.

Those who've been here for ages are pretty well settled down into some sort of relationship, spouse or favourite brand of beer. Sometimes people ask about Thai hotels. I have trouble remembering the last time I stayed in a Thai hotel. :dunno:

It must have been that one in Chiang Mai Flash, apparently the bed bug poison caused memory loss as well as fatalities. B)

Hah! You'll pay for that remark ... if I can remember what it was now. :hmmm:

p.s. The only hotels I've stayed in during the past few years have been in Malaysia and Laos. :dunno:
