Tsunami warning issued for Thai coastal provinces following 8.9-scale quake in Indonesia

The Information and Communications Technology Ministry has issued an urgent warning for people living on Andaman coastal areas in southern Thailand to evacuate following a 8.9-Richter-scale quake in Indonesia.

 

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre was at the west coast of northern Sumatra in Indonesia at 3:45 pm.

Disaster expert warns tsunami could hit Phuket at 4:48 pm

Dr Seri Suparathit, an expert on quakes, said Phuket would be hit by tsunami at 4:48pm.

 

He said Krabi and Ranong could be hit by tsunami waves at 5:58 pm.

Evacuations, strong quake off Sumatra

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 on the Richter scale rocked the western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the US Geological Survey said this afternoon.

 

A tsunami warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

 

In Phuket, people said they felt the tremor about 3.50pm.

 

Reports said evacuations were underway along the coastal provinces of Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga.
