July 21 - Northern Solstice

Today marked our Winter Solstice, and those of you who live in northern Europe/Scotland/Russia etc are presumably enjoying very long evenings. I take some small comfort from the fact that each day from here brings me closer to our Spring, even if our Winter is a pale imitation of the horrors that face many of you come December. How anyone lives in northern China/Korea or Japan is a mystery to me. Bring on October.

Northern Solstice

The northern solstice on the earth occurs in June according to the Gregorian calendar. Common are June 20 and June 21. It is therefore also known as June solstice in Western culture.

In the Northern Hemisphere it is the summer solstice, in the Southern Hemisphere it is the winter solstice.

(I cant change the title of the post, so you'll have to live with it)
